Baby Sign Language Classes in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island
Just yesterday my two year old said "Mom, I really like your dress, where did you get it?" The kid talks up a storm and I am convinced that it's because we did baby signs with her from a very young age. There is no question that kids can communicate before they can speak and if you are consistent with baby signs you will be amazed. Plus, in addition to being a great party trick it is pretty amazing when your baby shows you that they see the moon or hear the ice cream truck.

Baby Fingers is a class that uses music and movement to teach babies and toddlers how to sign that offers classes throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. Started by a deaf educator, Lora Heller has taught hundreds of NYC moms and babies how to sign. She is also the author of 9 baby sign books which are a great way to learn if you can't make it to a class.
As Lora told me, providing babies with accessible language at an early age promotes overall speech and language development, as well as parent/child bonding. Her main word of advice - be patient! Sing, tell stories, and SIGN, SIGN, SIGN! The long and short term benefits are worth it but it takes time and consistency. As for my advice, I found that starting with signs that had to do with food worked really well. I would give my daughter one blueberry and then show her the more sign, she caught on pretty quickly.
And now for the SPECIAL DISCOUNT - mention this Mommy Poppins post and they will waive the $25 registration fee when you enroll in their fall 2008 classes!
To check out one of these free trial classes, contact Lora to reserve a spot at lora@mybabyfingers.com.
