Black-owned businesses in Philadelphia are thriving, and we’re highlighting some of the kid-friendly places where families can show support during Black History Month, or any month. These Black-owned shops and landmarks reflect the diversity of Philly’s Black community, teach our shared history, and enhance the culture of a city to which African Americans have made immense contributions.

In honor of Black History Month, we’ve rounded up a list of black-owned businesses and historical sites and museums you can visit to learn more about African American history in Central Florida. From the first all-black incorporated city in the U.S., to the field where Jackie Robinson played his first professional baseball game, Central Florida has many historical sites and landmarks to explore.

We’ve also included a list of black-owned restaurants and shops near Orlando. Many local businesses have been impacted by the pandemic over the last couple of years; your family can support these establishments not just in February, but all year. While this is a spotlight of some amazing black-owned businesses, it by no means encompasses everywhere worth visiting.

February is Black History Month, which means there is no better time to get to know some of the many Black-owned businesses and African American cultural landmarks in the DC area. From Black-owned restaurants and retailers to African American historical sites and museums, you're sure to find plenty of places to wow and inspire your family on this list.

Here are 22 Black-owned restaurants, Black-owned shops and businesses, and African American cultural sites in and near DC to visit with kids all year long. Some of them also made our lists of free museums in DC and must-try ice cream shops near DC!

New Jersey holds a unique position in African American history. There are at least 16 underground railroad sites you can still visit in New Jersey, including ones in Jersey City, Boonton, Cranbury, Salem, and Medford. Lawnside in Camden County was a haven for freed and escaped slaves and became the first all-Black community in the North. Black History Month provides an opportunity to honor the lives and legacies of Black New Jerseyans past and present. Shopping at Black-owned businesses is one of the most powerful actions you can take to support the Black community in New Jersey. Not only can your money help small businesses grow, but it puts power directly into the hands of Black entrepreneurs, artists, and creators.

While this is not a comprehensive list, we’ve compiled 50 family-friendly African American historical sites, Black-owned shops, Black-owned restaurants, and Black-owned small businesses in New Jersey. In seeking out these Black-owned businesses, you stand in solidarity and make a difference today—not just for Black History Month, but 365 days a year. Any day is a good day to show your support.
