The first weekend of March is living up to the cliché that the month comes in like a lion, since it is packed with Spring-welcoming holidays Holi and Nokour (don't forget this weekend is the big , colorful Pagwah Festival!); a free children's gardening workshop; a Dr. Seuss Birthday Party; St. Patrick's Day Parades in Queens and Staten Island; and cool crafts, music and museum, and Shakespeare events. Friday, March 5
Children's Museum of Manhattan Target Free Fridays--UWS, Manhattan
The first Friday of every month the CMoM opens its doors for free for special evening hours, from 5-8pm, for families to enjoy all of the exhibits and special programs. FREE

Saturday, March 6
Horseplay--Midtown West, Manhattan
Music and humor come together at this Meet the Artist event and show. Horseplay invents plots, dialogue, characters, and songs right on cue, along with audience suggestions and participation, which are essential to create a laugh-filled display of quick-wit. FREE

2nd Annual Family Day--Flushing, Queens
The Queens Botanical Garden's 2nd Annual Family Day gives kids (and parents) a taste of their Children's Garden program. Plant seeds, learn about gardening and the environment, and get your hands dirty at this cool green event. FREE

Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration--SoHo, Manhattan
Every Saturday, McNally Jackson Books has story time, and this week's is dedicated to the most famous Dr., Dr. Seuss. The store has the best description of the event: Come join us, we say, At McNally Jackson in Soho this Saturday. At noon we’ll read our favorite Seuss books, Revel in language and sartorial looks.We’ll don bowties, craft crazy socks and hats,We’ll prowl the store like Seussian cats. On March 6, Yvonne Brooks will host and it’s free.If you’re 3 to 8, you’ll fit perfectly.  FREE

Yarn: Make-it & Take-it--UWS, Manhattan
Michael's, the arts & crafts store, is hosting a free doll-making event for families. Make cute and cuddly yarn companions in-store. Heads up: The website makes it look like they are promoting particular yarns, leaving the possibility they could encourage you to purchase some. FREE

Sunday, March 7
Free Shakespeare Class--Tribeca, Manhattan
The Church Street Music School and The Oxford Shakespeare Company presents these Shakespeare classes for kids. Bring a monologue to work on and join in on voice and movement exercises, or just watch. All ages and levels welcome. FREE

FrogWatch USA: Citizen Science--Mid-Island, Staten Island

I think these Citizen Science events are so cool: FrogWatch USA is a frog and toad monitoring program that gives you the opportunity to help scientists conserve amphibians. At this event you'll learn to recognize distinct voices among the chorus of frog and toad calls. Pre-registration required. FREE

St. Patrick's Day Parade(s)--Sunnyside, Queens and West Brighton, Staten Island
The St. Patrick's for All Parade in Sunnyside is particularly family-friendly. You can enjoy floats, stilt walkers, unicyclists, and puppeteers. The parade route goes East on Skillman, north on 56th Street, East on Woodside Avenue and ends at Woodside Avenue and 61st Street. The 46th Annual Staten Island St. Patrick's Day Parade is fun for kids, and has a really local feel. Boy and Girl scouts parade along with bagpipes and step dancers (but that doesn't mean there won't be any intoxicated folks hanging around, too.) Both FREE.

Fun-Filled Day at the Queens Museum of Art--Flushing, Queens
Meet the artist Daniel Bozhkov whose exhibition Republik of Prepetual Reconstitution and Rebuild is currently on view at QMA. All will be invited to create artwork inspired by Moby Dick, and to participate in a reading of the classic novel, as well. Snacks and refreshments, too. FREE

Kidrockers--LES, Manhattan
These concerts feature artists in indie music and comedy, and are designed to bring families together to enjoy new music. Artists perform original (not specifically made for children) songs in a manner that is kid-friendly. $12 in advance, $15 at the door
