What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Weekend Events for Kids on Long Island, October 24-25: Halloween Parties, Fall Festival and More

With one weekend left until Halloween, there are lots of great events going on to celebrate. And, before the weather turns cold, there are also some really nice Fall outdoor events for families to check out this weekend. There is still time to go pumpkin picking, and if you're looking for great farms, check out our pumpkin picking post. Or, we recently shared great Halloween events and the best kid friendly Haunted Houses on the island as well. So whether you're looking for more ways to get your "wear" out of those costumes or just looking for ways to get out, we've rounded up some of the best events on Long Island for families this weekend:

8th Annual Ghostly Gala at The Long Island Children's Museum
Saturday, October 24, 6pm-9pm
11 Davis Avenue, Garden City

We have a great Children's Museum here on Long Island, in case you haven't had a chance to check it out yet. This weekend, they are holding their annual Halloween party which includes not only a chance to celebrate Halloween and wear costumes, but also a great way to check out the entire museum by trick-or-treating through it. There are plenty of other cool things going on, like crafts and even live bats on display. You can even meet Stellaluna, the popular character from her own children's book. BE sure to call in advance to ensure you get ticket to the event, which is $9 (or $7 if you are a member). For more information, call 516-224-5802 or visit the museum's website.

Fall Fair at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery
Saturday, October 24, 10am-4:30pm
1660 Rt 25A, Cold Spring Harbor

We've mentioned it before, but Cold Spring Harbor is one of the prettiest villages on the Island, and one of the reasons it is so charming is it's beauty and size. The Fish Hatchery is no exception. Amidst fall foliage, the Fall Festival here is a great way to enjoy it. Your kids can learn to fish for trout (all the equipment and instruction are provided), play games and enjoy treats and refreshments while learning about our environment and how to conserve and preserve it. There is a small fee of $6 per adult and $4 per child aged 4 and up (3 and under are free). Visit their website for more information.

Scary Stories at the Fire Island Lighthouse
Saturday, October 24, 4pm-8pm
4640 Captree Island, Captree Island

Famous for it's lighthouses, Long Island's tall beacons do a great job celebrating the history of the Island. And the Fire Island Lighthouse does a particularly good job with events for kids. This weekend, pack up the picnic blankets and thermoses with hot cocoa and head to this famous Lighthouse for some Halloween storytelling. While you're there, starting at 4pm, you can take a tour of the lighthouse and afterward, once it's dark, snuggle up and listen to the spooky stories of local happenings and history. The regular fee of $6 per adult and $4 per child applies. for more information, check out the Fire Island Lighthouse website.

Pumpkin Parks at Adventureland

Saturday, October 24, 11am-6pm
2245 Rt 110, Farmingdale

Head out to LI's most popular theme park before it closes for the season for some commercial Halloween fun. This is a FREE event, unless you want to ride the rides, and then normal ride fees apply. Dress in costume, trick or treat throughout the park, and enjoy amusement park fun without paying admission fees! The kids love checking out other kids in costume and grabbing all the free giveaways! If it rains, the rain date is Sunday the 25th! Visit the website for more information.
