Turkey Farms on Long Island You Can Visit
We've written about Fall Farms, Pumpkin Farms, Pick Your Own Apple Farms, Spring and Summer Berry Farms, and even Christmas Tree Farms out here on Long Island. But what about the Turkey? Whether you just want to pay homage to your Thanksgiving feast or pick up a fresh, local or even organic turkey, Long Island has many poultry farms where you can get up close (or snap a photo from far away) with Thanksgiving's most popular mascot. Stop by and say hi, or for you serious locavores, pick up a fresh local turkey to eat and save yourself a trip to the frozen foods isle. Here are some of the local farms to check out:
Note: If you are planning on buying a turkey for your feast, call ahead early. Some farms sell out.
Makinajian's Farm, 276 Cuba Hill Rd, Huntington: Tucked just north of the Jericho Turnpike in Huntington is this four acre farm. From the road you can see the ducks, geese, chickens, and turkeys scampering around, and if you pull in you can even feed the birds. It is really low-key here. Their country store is great for fresh rotisserie chicken and they also offer fresh eggs and select vegetables. Most everything is certified organic as well. Call in advance to make sure they still have turkeys-631.368.9320
Mecox Bay Dairy, Mecox Rd, Bridgehampton: Travelling to the Hamptons for The Holiday weekend? Stop by this traditional dairy farm for the fixins AND the bird! Mecox Bay is famous for it's fancy cheeses, and while you are there you can enjoy a tasting of some of their best. For more information, visit their website.
Miloski's Poultry Farm, 4418 Middle Country Rd, Calverton: For the nostalgia of an old quaint farm, this is the perfect spot. This is also the place to go for what I've heard is the best turkey you can find on the Island. With turkeys running all over the yard, you can stop in and let your kids have a look at the farm, but you need to call at least a few hours in advance to reserve your bird-these birds are FRESH if you know what I mean. Call in the morning, and by the time you head out in the afternoon, your turkey can be wrapped and ready. Muloski's also has great fresh fixens, potato salad and duck, for non-turkey eaters.
