Tour de Parc – Battery Park City
Kids of all ages can get out and ride at this “everyone’s a winner” cycling event.  Kids can scoot or cycle (training wheels and trikes are okay!) Helmet and bike decorating, safety lessons and obstacle course fun are stops along the way.  Helmets and pre registration required.  FREE

National Estuaries Day Festival – Queens
Where better to celebrate our local Little Neck Bay and Long Island Sound than in the great outdoors? Join in on canoe or boat ride, nature walks on the center’s myriad trails, biking and honey harvesting. Also on the schedule are nature inspired dance workshops, arts and crafts and poetry readings. FREE  

Fiesta! Celebrating Hispanic and Latin American Culture – Upper East Side
The Met has assembled a day of special events to honor National Hispanic Heritage Month, starting out with a procession of Native American Dancers parading up the museums front steps and through the exhibit halls. Animated films, story time and live music performances round out the family activities of the day.  FREE with museum admission.

Family Affair: Viva La Vida—The Bronx
Commemorate the Mexican Revolution’s centennial with a host of family activities and a brand new photography exhibit by Paul Strand at The Bronx Museum of the Arts.  First, visit the exhibit, The Mexican Portfolio, with museum guides and participate in analyzing and sketching the photographs. Then learn popular Mexican folksongs from the period and act out scenes of Mexican life as portrayed in paintings on exhibit.  Registration required. FREE with suggested donation.

Stack em High – Battery Park City
Kids aged 4 through 8 years old can have fun building their favorite NYC skyscrapers with blocks and then pose for a take home photo to remember it by. Registration for the program needs to be done the Friday before. $5.

36th Atlantic Antic Street Festival—Brooklyn
One of the biggest street fairs in the city with over a million people heading out to Atlantic Avenue each fall for ten stages of all day free live music (r & b, jazz, rock, country, you name it – even tunes for tots are on deck) and hundreds of vendors. Kids will dig the pony rides, inflatable rides, face painting and balloon sculptures.  The Antic is also well known for the mouthwatering food choices– grilled sardines, pulled pork, baklava and more. Plus, check out the Ralph Kramden era MTA busses while they are out on the streets during the 17th Annual Bus Festival produced in conjunction with Atlantic Antic.  Free admission to the Transit Museum, fun children’s activities and plenty of old busses. FREE

Raptor Day—The Bronx
Now is a great time to spot birds of prey soaring above the Hudson River and Wave Hill is the perfect place to do it, not to mention, a nice place to spend the day. Join as they celebrate raptors with live presentations, hands on activities, story time, nature and birding walks and more. FREE with garden admission.  Some activities may require advance registration.

The Bronx Native American Festival—The Bronx
NYC’s largest open green space, Pelham Bay Park, is hosting their annual day devoted to the indigenous peoples of the Americas by keeping their traditional storytelling, music, dance and food alive. Learn about the lifestyles of groups like the Apache, Blackfoot, Narrangansett and Chichimec. FREE


Out of NYC:

More fall fun to be had out of town this weekend, too.  This week we posted about the always popular Hudson Valley Garlic Festival up in Saugerties, New York.

If you are headed to New Jersey, read our post on the fantastic fall festivals in the Garden State or check out Wings and Wheels at nearby Teterborough Airport on Saturday or Sunday where WWII airplanes, helicopters and other winged antique will be on display. Admission is $12 for adults, $7 for kids ages 3-11.

Now is the perfect time to hit up one of Long Islands famous corn mazes and pumpkin picking patches. while you are out there, why not learn all about the migration of Monarch butterflies while grabbing some early Autumn sun at Jones Beach.
