Join Me at a Hebrew National Picnic: This Saturday, we're helping The Motherhood and Hebrew National hot dogs throw a massive picnic for NYC families. The picnic will be on Randall's Island on Saturday, May 22, 2010 from 11:30 am- 3:30 pm and everyone is invited. At the picnic will be giant puzzles, mechanical bull rides, activities for kids and family, music and the Hebrew National AirStream bus where free hot dogs, fruit and drinks will be served up. If you are planning on coming please email your RSVP with Hebrew National in the subject and how many in your party and I will send you directions. I hope to see you there.

School Gardens: Cobble Hill's PS 29 was visited by Rachel Ray as one of 25 NYC schools participating in a program to have healthier relationships with food. As part of the program the PS 29 students created a vegetable and herb garden. Rachel Ray is also helping to create healthier menus for 1,600 NYC public schools. Go Food Revolution!

Another new park for NYC: Teardrop Park South in Battery Park City is an addition to the northern part of Teardrop Park that hosts a wonderful playground. The southern addition has rock formations and seating to watch performances.

School Project: The East Village Community School has recorded a CD called Songs from the East Village, a collection of music representing the incredibly diverse community in their school. After raising $5000 to record the CD, they're trying to raise another $5000 to get it produced. Donate $25 or more and you'll get an advance copy of the CD and help bring these kids' dream to fruition.

Leave Your Kids at the Park? This Saturday, May 22 has been declared "Take our Children to the Park...And Leave Them There Day." In an effort to peel back the helicopter parenting culture that has developed in America and get kids back playing outside and able to not have to be supervised by parents 24/7 Lenore Skenazy, founder of the Free Range Kids movement , is encouraging parents to leave their kids (ages 7 and up) alone in the park for half an hour or longer on Saturday, May 22. What do you think? Could you, would you do it?

Walking School Bus: The City has started an experimental "Walking School Bus" program designed to encourage kids to get more exercise, get to school on time and inspire community. As part of the program which is going on at seven schools in NYC, children, parents and school volunteers walk 1/4 to 1/2 a mile to school together as a group. I Think it's a great idea.

Disclosure: I am being compensated for my time in co-hosting the Hebrew National picnic.
