New York City Kids Weekend Events January 22-24: Free Storytimes, Concerts, Theater & Dancing, Stained Glass Making & More

Four day weeks always seem the longest, but the good weather has us energized to get out and go this weekend. Read on for where to get your (traditional) groove on, what kids' shows to see, and what concerts are in town (Audra Rox!), Plus make your own stained glass windows, a scavenger hunt in Grand Central, make your own breads, camp fairs, nature tours and more.

Friday, January 22
Kids Story Hour--Midtown East, Manhattan
Hot coffee hangout Birch Coffee invites families, kids and nannies to hang out in their cozy upstairs library and listen to Abe's Fish and Creaky Old House. Orange juice and hot cocoa available for purchase. FREE

Shababa Bakery--UES, Manhattan
Kids squish, roll and braid their very own challah, while singing along to feel that Shabbat spirit. Then after, you bring the challah home with you, to bake and enjoy. $10/kid, Free/adults

Saturday, January 23
Galileo's Telescope--Inwood, Manhattan
Sounds like a must for kids with a lust for space: Learn about who Galileo was, when he lived, and why the telescope was such an important invention. Kids will get to discuss how his observations challenged the world, and they'll see how the Hubble Space Telescope is doing the same thing. FREE

Folk Music for Kids--Rego Park, Queens
Queens Art, Culture & Fun is putting on a music program for kids 8 and younger. Relax and listen Darlene Graham entertains with folk songs just for children. FREE

Traditional Dance Social with Thunderbird Indian Dancers & Singers--Battery Park City, Manhattan
At MP, we love the National Museum of the American Indian not only because it is free, but because it is less traveled. And lately, they have been hosting some awesome events. This Saturday, spend your evening with the kids and traditional social dancing, featuring the Heyna Second Sons drum group. FREE

Form and Function: Stained Glass Windows--BPC, Mahattan
Take their love for architecture to a new level: Kids learn about the decorative and functional uses of stained-glass windows, then, using a variety of materials, they get to create their own, either to tell a story or purely for decoration. Suggested donation of $5/child.

Wild, Wild Wolves
—UWS, Manhattan
NYC is a wild place, but its not every day that kids get to meet a real live wolf. Atka, the Arctic Wolf, joins specialist who will teach kids about the importance of this endangered species and efforts to repopulate them in the West. $10, adults, $8 Children

Sunday, January 24
New York Family Day Camp Fair--UWS, Mahattan
Even though we are right smack in the middle of winter, you know it is that time of year when summer has to be on your mind--well summer camp, that is. This weekend (this fair is also happening on Saturday), 50 day-camps and sleep-away camps will be in town to show you what they are made of, let you see what's out there, and get a better idea of which one might be best for your little ones. Pre-register to be entered to win prizes. FREE

Winter Birding Tour--Mid-Island, Staten Island
Freshkills Park has some pretty cool wetlands and creeks, ready and waiting for you to explore them. The tour will be held by naturalists from the SI Museum and park planners, and traveled by both bus and foot. Registration is required, and it could go quickly since seeing the Park in winter months is not normally seen. FREE

Americana Family Jamboree--Midtown East, Manhattan
We've featured this event before and heard it is a good time. Relax, dance or rock out to acoustic music from the Great American Songbook, along 4-piece band complete with upright bass, fiddle and banjo, performing bluegrass, honky-tonk, folk and sing-a-longs. Plus: They have a kids menu and margaritas for adults. FREE (+ cost of food)

Audra Rox--Gowanus, Brooklyn
A family-rock favorite, Audra Rox is doing a show at the super-cool Bell House in Gowanus. Enjoy the concert with the kids and use it as an opporunity to check out the space, and get an idea of their upcoming events. $10
