News: War on Junk Food, Broadway Kids' Audition and New Bronx Zoo Babies

With schools wrapping up their half days and blowing out the candles on those combo summertime birthday parties, we decided to keep the news short and sweet. Enjoy the start of summer break by cooing at a pair of baby lemurs, getting creative in the recently extended MoMA Material Lab, waiting in line so your kids can audition for a brand-new Broadway musical, and cheering (or booing, depending on your point of view) the war on junk food, which seems to be coming from all sides these days, not just Bloomberg.

The sassy NYC writer behind the popular Mom-101 blog discovered her daughter also has a lot of spunk when her kid single-handedly launched a letter writing campaign against sugary junk in her school cafeteria. Sounds like a chip off the old blogger.

Speaking of what we put in our mouths, First Lady Michelle Obama is inviting kid chefs to compete in the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge. Children ages 8-12 can submit nutritious original recipes for a chance to win a trip to a Kids' "State Dinner" in Washington D.C. later this summer. Why can't they turn this into a reality show?

And more good food news: Disney has banned commercials for junk food on all of its children's programming, both on TV and the radio. Here's hoping they get some decent food options in their parks soon.

The Amazing Max and the Box of Interesting Things, which we just mentioned in our post about magic shows for kids, is taking a cool Disney trick and staging a special performance for children with autism. The show on Saturday, June 23 at 1pm will be sensory-friendly and feature a quiet area for anyone who needs a break from all the abracadabra.

New baby animals are on the loose in the Bronx Zoo: A pair of adorable infant lemurs born this past spring have joined the long-running Madagascar exhibit. Much cuter than the hissing roaches.

The American Museum of Natural History has a new free app that helps illuminate its current exhibit Creatures of Light: Nature's Bioluminescence. Expect interactive animations, photo galleries and educational videos.

Another popular exhibit, the Material Lab at the Museum of the Modern Art, has been extended through the end of August. It's a great indoor escape when the thermostat nears triple digits.

Remember the classic movie A Christmas Story? (Of course, you do: It's the only thing on cable on December 25.) Well, it's been adapted into a Broadway-bound musical and the casting director's looking for kids. So if you think your 8- to 13-year-old has what it takes to play Ralphie or one of his pals, bring a song, head shot and resume, and a lot of patience to the open audition this Saturday, June 16.

Do you need another reminder to put sunscreen on your kids this summer? No? Well, the Times is giving you one anyway backed up by some really scary statistics about the dangers of sun exposure.
