Happy New Year! It’s great to be back and looking forward to all of the wonderful events happening on the Island in 2011. With the crush of the holidays and the excitement of the new year behind us, it’s simply the perfect time for good old fashioned family bonding. Here are some events that might strike your fancy – all happening this weekend!

Looking for a relaxing, back to nature start to your weekend? Join the naturalists at the bird sanctuary as they band birds and discuss the process and the purpose. Breakfast refreshments will be served. Call to reserve your spot.

In this one man variety show, the audience will be treated to improvisation, storytelling and music. Rick Huddle requests that parents and kids alike use their imagination while finding the humor in ordinary, everyday occurrences.

Longing for warmer weather? Perhaps dreaming of being on the water? Listen to local fishermen, storytellers and anthropologists as they speak about the importance of the water. Children have the opportunity to cast a net and use authentic tools for carving a decoy.

Tomie DePaola’s story of a “good” witch with a magical pot of pasta is brought to life with music. If you plan on attending this performance, be sure to try to reserve tickets for the workshop prior to the show. In this 45 minute addition, children and their adults can participate in their own rendition of Strega Nona. Refreshments are served. The price for this option is $5 but is space is limited so reserve early.

There is a serious water-theme going on at the Long Island Children’s Museum this weekend! In their Salt Water Story Series, you have the opportunity to view movies that speak of the importance of the water, one that focuses on a boy and his penguin friend and another about how bath time becomes an adventure when two girls are swept out to sea! A little something for all your water rats!
