Hockey and Ice Skating Summer Camps for NYC Kids

When considering athletic camps for summertime fun, swimming, baseball, tennis, and outdoor team sports come to mind first, but if your kids prefer their summer vacation served ice cold it's totally doable in NYC even when the temperatures are well above freezing. Four of our city's wonderful indoor ice-skating rinks offer figure skating or ice hockey summer camps for your budding Michelle Kwan or Wayne Gretzky.

Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers – Chelsea
Pier 61, 23rd Street and the Hudson River
Downtown athletic complex Chelsea Piers offers a number of programs at its indoor rink. All camps run June 19-September 1 and bussing is available from a variety of Manhattan and Brooklyn locations. Extended hours are available for an additional fee.

Ice Hockey Camp
Ages 6 to 16
This full-day program includes daily ice time as well as off-ice training and classroom instruction. Campers also receive cross training in Chelsea Piers’ gymnastic, rock-climbing, basketball, and soccer facilities. Some weeks have specific themes like goaltending and goal scoring or a girls-only session. Players must provide all their own equipment.

Ice Skating Camp
Ages 6 to 12
Skaters of all skill levels including absolute beginners can try this full-day program. Campers enjoy on-ice time daily, plus cross training and perform bi-weekly shows for family and friends.

Junior Ice Skating Camp
Ages 4 to 5
8:45am-2pm
This program helps younger campers transition to full-day programs. In addition to ice time, campers enjoy off-ice activities like yoga, dance classes, arts and crafts, and more.

Preschool Summer Camp
Ages 3 to 5
8:45am-noon
During this half-day program, preschoolers learn basic skating skills such as balance, marching, starting, and stopping. A low counselor-to-camper ration is maintained and campers must be toilet trained.

Camp at City Ice Pavilion – Long Island City
47-32 32nd Place between 47th and 48th Streets
July 10-August 18
Ages 4+
Young skaters can attend a learn-to-skate camp. A learn-to-skate and play hockey camp is also offered. Older, more experienced players can enjoy a hockey camp commiserate with their level of play.

Camp at World Ice Arena – Flushing
13135 Avery Avenue near 131st Street
July 5-August 25
Ages 4 to 17
This Queens rink has full and half-day camp options for both figure skaters and hockey players.

Figure Skating Camp
Kids participate in group lessons, study ballet, and choreography, and take specialized jumping, spinning, and power skating workshops. The program culminates in a public performance. All campers must be current members of the International Skating Institute or U.S. Figure Skating.

Hockey Camp
Hockey campers participate in both on-ice and in-classroom training during this hockey camp. The morning session will focus on skating and skills development, while campers spend the afternoon working on game tactics and strategy. Off-ice training includes work in puck handling, shooting, conditioning, and playing a variety of field sports. All hockey players must be registered with USA Hockey prior to camp.

Figure Skating Camp at Aviator Sports and Events Center – Mill Basin

Ages 5 and up
Details for 2017 have yet to be finalized, but this camp ran on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays last year and is open only to experienced figure skaters who have passed an evaluation. Please call the Figure Skating Office for pricing and further information. 718-758-7514.

Staten Island Skating Pavilion – Staten Island
3080 Arthur Kill Road near Johnson Road
The borough's only year-round rink hosts a few programs for figure skaters.

Elite & Bridge Training Program
July 5-August 28
Ages 8 and up
Tuesdays-Thursdays, 9am-2:30pm
Aimed at serious skaters, this camp requires a Basic 4 level rating or higher. This camp includes three hours of on-ice time split between instruction and freestyle work including jump, footwork, and spin technique. There's also an off-ice class.

Pavilion Prodigy Summer Camp
July 5-August 18
Ages 2.5 to 8
9am-2:30pm
This camp preps kids for future programs in figure skating and hockey and caters to beginners and advanced skill levels. Campers will enjoy 1.5 hours of ice time each day in addition to a dance and movement class off ice as well as outdoor play. Each week has a different theme and related activities and campers can attend three, four, or five days per week.
