Free and Fun Things to Do this Weekend for NYC Kids: Atlantic Antic, Medieval Fest, CMA Block Party, Animal Blessings Oct 1-2

9/28/11 - By Stephanie Ogozalek

It seems like school just started and yet somehow October is upon us. And since many schools are closed for Rosh Hashanah, families are trying to figure out how to fill the four-day weekend.

While there aren't any kids' events happening this Thursday and Friday, we've got suggestions for things to do. And once the weekend roles around, there's a slew of special activities, festivals and fairs. The The Children’s Museum of the Arts is throwing a big bash to mark the grand opening of its stunning new space in Hudson Square. The Queens County Farm Museum celebrates the season with its Apple Festival. Other annual favorites include the Medieval Festival in Fort Tryon Park, Atlantic Antic in Brooklyn, the Chile Pepper Fiesta at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Blessing of the Animals at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.

Plus, two big Halloween events kick off this weekend: the Bronx Zoo's Boo at the Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden's new Haunted Pumpkin Garden.

And that's just a sampling of the great things going on this weekend. Read on for all of our picks and remember, you can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Fall Fun Guide.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

Thursday, September 29 and Friday, September 30

Although there aren't any specific kids' events for us to recommend on these two days, we do have a few ideas. Head out of town to pick your own apples and pumpkins. You don't have to travel far; we rounded up a bunch of places within an hour of midtown Manhattan by car, and a few are even accessible by public transportation. Check out our Pick Your Own Guide for all of your options.

Friday is your last chance to see the awesome Lego animal sculptures at the Bronx Zoo.

Take a spin on the recently opened Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park. We went to look at it last weekend and although we didn't get a chance to ride (it was swarmed due to the Dumbo Arts Festival), the merry-go-round and its glass pavilion are truly breathtaking.

Talk a walk on Section 2 of the High Line.

Head to Coney Island where the Wonder Wheel is spinning and Luna Park is still open.

Visit the Brooklyn Children’s Museum to see its brand-new interactive installation The Secret of Circles

Take a trip to Astoria's Museum of the Moving Image to check out the great Jim Henson’s Fantastic World exhibit. You can visit for free on Friday evening.

And if you're celebrating Rosh Hashanah, Happy New Year!

See all Thursday and Friday events.
