Celebrating Father's Day in Fairfield County, CT with the Whole Family

Truth be told, I miss the days when a nicely wrapped tie did the trick for Father’s Day. But it's been years since my husband wore a tie to his job—a decade, in fact. (Just last weekend, my 4-year-old burst into tears when she saw my husband in his blue jeans; she thought he put on his "work suit" to head into the office!)

Well, dad can spend Father's Day wearing whatever he likes. He can don his board shorts for a day trip to one of CT's great beaches, or put on his workout clothes for a day of biking, hiking or climbing. But if he just wants to throw on those comfy old jeans, there are lots of casual but fun-filled ways to celebrate Father's Day in Fairfield County with the whole family:

Summer Solstice at the Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Stamford, CT
Sunday, June 21
This Father's Day just happens to land on summer solstice, and the museum will celebrate with a hike, summer constellations in the planetarium, sun-inspired crafts and s'mores. Father's Day also coincides with the opening of the museum latest exhibit, Nature's Numbers, exploring math's often overlooked presence in the great outdoors.

Beardsley Zoo, Bridgeport, CT

Fathers are admitted free to Bridgeport's Beardsley Zoo on Father’s Day. With its very manageable walking loop, this zoo has always been a local favorite.

Fairfield County Irish Festival, Fairfield, CT
Sunday, June 21
Take dad to the Irish Festival at Fairfield University to enjoy traditional step dancing, Irish food and drink, inflatables, crafts and music. The fair runs June 19-21. Adult tickets are $12, and children under age 14 are admitted free. There is no parking available on the Fairfield University campus, so you will need to take a shuttle bus from one of the following parking lots: Fairfield train station lot, Tomlinson Middle School lot, or Ludlowe High School lot.

Father’s Day 5K, Ridgefield, CT
Sunday, June 21
If your dad is a runner, sign him up for the Boy Scout Troop 431's 5K in Ridgefield. The race kicks off at 8am from the Ridgefield High School. Registration is $25.

Darien Collectors' Car Show, Norwalk, CT
Sunday, June 21
This show has outgrown Darien and moved on to Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Park in Norwalk. Admission is FREE, though donations toward the New England Auto Museum are encouraged. Lots of food and fun available!

Stepping Stones Museum for Children, Norwalk, CT
Sunday, June 21
It's right next door to the aforementioned car show, and admission is FREE on Father's Day for dads!

Strawberry Festival, Monroe, CT
Sunday, June 21
Oh, it's so sweet and simple. Strawberry shortcake, pies, plenty for the kids to do, plus a fine arts and crafts show. Maybe mom can even take one for the team, venturing here alone to let daddy nap.
