Things to do with kids: Indoor Playgrounds and Play Spaces in Brooklyn

[UPDATED: JANUARY 15, 2013]

The winter weather can be downright brutal some days and it might be difficult to leave your apartment at all. The kids will still need to be occupied however and you can only stay cooped up inside for so long. Fortunately there are many great places in Brooklyn offering indoor play spaces to keep your kids engaged and happy. So bundle them up and brave the cold...here are five options guaranteed to keep you busy and warm until Spring.

The Learning Garden - Prospect Heights
186 Underhill Avenue between Sterling Place and St Johns Place
Open play is offered Monday to Friday from 11am-6pm and costs $12 for a daily pass. There are also discounted multi-packs and seasonal passes available if you plan to visit often. This large and airy space is perfect for ages 0-4 and has plenty of interactive toys to keep them busy. Bonus: They're located in the same building as Blue Marble, which has fabulous ice cream, as well as coffee and other snacks.

Families First Brooklyn - Cobble Hill
250 Baltic Street between Clinton and Court Streets
If you're looking for open access to a play space in your neighborhood, you might consider joining Families First Brooklyn on Baltic Street. Family Membership costs $75 per year and for an additional $275 per year, you can purchase a PlaySpace membership, which entitles you to unlimited use of the space during weekdays from 9am-4pm. The play space is fully stocked with toys, mats and other materials for children up to age 4.

The Moxie Spot - Cobble Hill
81 Atlantic Avenue at Hicks Street
The Moxie Spot is a restaurant and play space, with a large upstairs play area open daily. They charge a $2.50 fee per child for use of the play space (waived for every $15 spent on food). The Moxie Spot also hosts many family-friendly events such as sing-a-longs, movie nights, bingo nights and story time. Check the website for a complete schedule.

if i were a toy - Carroll Gardens
369 Court Street between Carroll Street and 1st Place
This Carroll Gardens toy store also offers a variety of classes, as well as children's haircuts. Through the magic of curtains and movable shelves, it can transform itself into a fairly large open space. Choose from art workshops and music classes for kids ages 3 months to 5 years. Check their website for details and contact information.

ArtsCetera - Cobble Hill
212 Smith Street between Baltic and Butler Streets
ArtsCetera hosts children's programs such as art and music classes in their storefront space. However, several times a week the space is available for drop-in open play. The cost is just $10 per family (up to two children) and discounts are granted for multi-pass packages. Check their website for the weekly schedule.

In addition, signing up for classes at Everyday Athlete or NY Kids Club entitles you to use their indoor play spaces at designated times. Please check their websites or contact your neighborhood location for details.

For more indoor activities, check our our Indoor Activity Guide.
