AfterSchool and Weekend Classes for Kids in Queens

It can be a challenge tracking down great classes for your kids in Queens. To help make it a little easier, we rounded up some of the ones we think are worth checking out all over the borough. Feel free to add your faves in the comments.

Academic Lessons

Fast Track Kids offers after school and weekend tutoring help for children ages 3-7.

Kumon has centers all over Queens. Check out their site to find the one nearest you.

Visual Arts

Architots Young at Art Program
This Middle Village studio offers classes once a week for children years 5+ catered towards painting, sketching, mixed media collage making, and basic sculpting.

Drop In Workshops at The Queens Museum of Art
These workshops begin every Sunday from Sept. 6th. They allow children and their adult companions time in the museum’s studios to explore materials and themes found in their current exhibitions. The best part about these workshops are that they are free with museum admission.

Performing Arts

College Point Arts Center
The after school program offers homework help as well as elective courses in piano, martial arts, and art. There is a nice selection of weekend classes for children of all ages.

The Douglaston School of Music and Art
They offer private lessons in piano, violin, flute, clarinet, oboe, trumpet, saxophone, recorder, guitar, voice. There are also classes offered in musical theater, dance, and choir.

Studio E Dance Studio
This Flushing dance studio offers classes from preschool to adult and has been around forever. They have great recital performances so you can see your tot in action.

The Astoria Dance Center  has a full fall lineup of classes. Check out their website for more info.

Swimming

USA Pools At Flushing Meadow Corona Park Aquatic Center  
This is one of Queens’ best kept secrets. This indoor aquatic center offers open swim time as well as lessons for children and adults alike. It is a great affordable ($10 per lesson) way to spend free time.
Call the center for lesson schedules and information.
 
Horseback Riding
 
The Forest Hills Equine Center offers riding instruction in private and semi private lessons.
 
Science
 
NY Hall Of Science  
After-School Science Clubs offer students an enriching science experience one day a week. Each Club includes homework help, snack, exhibit exploration, and interactive science experiments.
 
Crafts                           
 
The Potter’s Wheel  holds seasonal pottery classes for children.
 
Michael’s Craft Store  has locations all over Queens. They consistently hold free crafting classes for kids.
 
Yoga
 
Tree Of Life Yoga Center  in Forest Hills holds Yoga classes for kids ages 3 – 11. Call for a schedule.
 
Cooking
 
Young Chefs Academy in Forest Hills has cooking classes for kids of all ages.
 
 

Other

The Queens Library  has a seemingly endless amount of events and classes for kids. Check out your local branch for everything from tween chess to toddler story time.

Flushing Recreation Center is located across from the Flushing Aquatic center and has a variety of classes for children ranging from Karate to Open Gym. They are affordable and in a very nice facility.

NY Parks Department After School Program holds after school sessions at most of their recreation centers. Call (212)-360-3666 for more information.

The Metropolitan Center for Etiquette and Protocol
(718)297-7557 located in the Jamaica Estates is offering several programs for children and teenagers.The program’s focus is on socialization and is designed to increase confidence and self-esteem. Students will learn Proper Introductions, Correct Handshakes, Eye contact, Dining skills, Telephone Etiquette, Thank You Notes, Conversation skills, Posture, Interview skills, What to wear, Fashion Tips and so much more.
 

United Nations International School in Jamaica, Queens has an afterschool program that is open to the public. Call the school at (718)-658-6166 for more information.
