It seems that each year the holiday decorations go up earlier and the trees get trimmed sooner.  If you’ve got kids or teens in your house who are ready to get a jumpstart on baking or cooking for the holidays, look into these great options that are well worth their time.  And you never know, perhaps you can put your feet up and let the kids do all the cooking next year!

Viking Cooking School

835 Franklin Avenue
Garden City
516.877.1010
Specific classes for 7 and older as well as 12-15 year olds.
Prices range from $59-$69 per person
I have found the Viking Cooking School to be a tried and true location for “Date Night” and “Girl’s Night Out” cooking classes.  This holiday season they have additional classes with the younger folk in mind.  There are specific classes that parents can take along with their young-ish children such as Gingerbread House Decorating, and also options such as “Teen Cookie Swap,” which is for the older-set.  Book as early as possible, as their classes are intimate and fill very quickly.

Sur La Table
1468 Northern Boulevard
Manhasset
516.365.3297
Specific classes for 5 years and older.
Prices range from $50 per person
Sur la Table offers classes for parents and their children six years and older.  Holiday Cookies for the Family and Gingerbread Decorating Party are two options that are part of their line-up for this season.  Check out Sur la Table’s website for information about their two and three day cooking camp for 8-12 year olds or 13-15 year olds to take part in during holiday break.  The camps range from $110-$175 per enrollee.

Gingerbread University
3225 Sound Avenue
Riverhead
631.727.7309
All ages, with parent assistance
Prices range from $17.95 for a jumbo cookie to $29.95 for a full gingerbread house.
Hours are from 11:30AM – 6PM, Thursday through Sunday; they will open all days except for Tuesday following Thanksgiving.
Although you can take “courses” at Gingerbread University year round, they are especially popular as the holidays approach.  Whether you choose to decorate festive large cookies or create a spectacular gingerbread home, your experience at this famous Riverhead store might be so sweet you’d like to make it an annual occurrence.  Their website gives you a few details about the options (everything from train cookies to Hanukah houses are available), but call to find out more specific information or to make a reservation to decorate!

Little Chefs
33 Jackson Avenue
Syosset
516.496.0754
9 Soundview Marketplace
Port Washington
516.767.7633
The class is appropriate for a range of ages – 2 through 11 year olds.
$55 for 2 hour session.
If you’re looking for a location for your little ones to roll up their sleeves and dive right into cooking, check out one of the Little Chefs locations.  They offer seasonal and/or monthly cooking classes throughout the year.  The “One Time Session” class gives children the opportunity to experience a Little Chef's class without booking an entire 10 week package.  The Christmas/Hanukah classes are 2 hours long and include a meal, craft and story time.  And if you have at least 6 “little chefs,” you can book a private session.

Kitchen Time
691 Broadway
Massapequa
516.795.4980
Classes for 5 and older.
$40 per person.
In the business of teaching children the fun and rewarding side of cooking for 25 years, Kitchen Time offers a few options for holiday classes.  If you hurry, you may be able to squeeze your child into their Thanksgiving class which is offered a week before Turkey Day.  “Gifts from the Kitchen” is offered closer to the winter holidays.  They will also do private session for 8 or more children, so inquire within for dates and times.
