12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Things to do with kids: 12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Along with the mild weather comes a fresh crop of outdoor festivals, street fairs and carnivals, big annual favorites like two of our April Go List picks, the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as smaller community happenings.

These spring fests are a great way to entertain your family for just a few bucks—sometimes even for FREE. And the activities are really diverse: Introduce the kids to old-fashioned games, celebrate planet Earth, chow down on homemade treats or watch live performances by kiddie bands, puppet troupes and more. Plus, these events aren't just fun, they foster community by bringing folks together to support a school, playground, cultural institution or common cause.

Festival season doesn't kick off until this weekend but you can start planning right now. Here are 12 awesome events to put in your April calendar.

Things to Do Over Holiday Break with NYC Kids 2012

Things to do with kids: Things to Do Over Holiday Break with NYC Kids 2012

Ever since my son started elementary school, I find that there just isn't enough free time for us to enjoy all of the great things New York City has to offer. That's why we love holiday break. We never leave town—instead, we fill our schedule with awesome museum outings, live stage shows, cool movies and magical holiday experiences. Call me crazy, but we even brave the crowds at the New York Botanic Garden's Holiday Train Show, the Rockefeller Center tree and the department store holiday windows.

If you're looking for entertaining and enriching things to do with your kids over holiday break in New York City, we have lots of ideas—more than 35 of them in fact, many free or inexpensive. You can find even more seasonal activities in our Holiday Fun Guide.

The Velveteen Rabbit: An Inventive Stage Adaptation That's True to the Spirit of the Beloved Book

The Velveteen Rabbit: An Inventive Stage Adaptation That's True to the Spirit of the Beloved Book

The Velveteen Rabbit is one of my family's favorite children's books... which is why we usually dread seeing it on stage. In the past, we've suffered through a few sleep-inducing adaptations of Margery Williams' classic tale that exuded none of its charm and were overly faithful to the detail-packed text.

That's why playwright Kevin Del Aguila's new interpretation for TheatreWorksUSA is such a treat. His hour-long Velveteen Rabbit is brisk and playful, yet also manages to capture the magic and emotion of the original book. Even better, it's one of those quality family shows that parents will enjoy just as much as their children. (I'm not ashamed to admit that my seven-year-old and I went through half a pack of tissues!)

5 Free Manhattan Public Art Displays Kids Will Love

5 Free Manhattan Public Art Displays Kids Will Love

Recently we've posted about a lot of cool new exhibits, but one of the great things about New York City is that you don't need to visit a museum to expose your kids to great art. Stroll around and you'll come across public art displays in parks, plazas and even on street medians. The best thing about public art? You can experience it for FREE.

Since we've noticed a bunch of eye-catching installations around town (how can you miss that upside-down elephant or those headless bodies?), we're highlighting five public exhibits so you can take your family on a DIY art tour this spring.

A Chocolate Birthday Party at Max Brenner's

Things to do with kids: A Chocolate Birthday Party at Max Brenner's

Last week I wrote about last minute birthday party ideas, inspired by perhaps my most slacker mom moment—not having a party planned on the actual morning of my daughter's 10th birthday (Who am I kidding? Probably not even top 10). I wasn't stressed though, this is New York, limitless possibilities lay at my fingertips. I couched my guilt and got on the internet, where all life's problems are solved.

Our plan was to take a few of her friends out to dinner. I wanted to find a place that would be fun and was a real experience. My daughter's favorite, Ninja, was nixed as too expensive, Serendipity had no room. We settled on Max Brenner's Chocolate by the Bald Man off Union Square.

New York City Crafts: 3 Places for Beading Fun or Birthday Parties with Kids

Things to do with kids: New York City Crafts: 3 Places for Beading Fun or Birthday Parties with Kids

Beading is a really fun craft activity for kids of all ages, grown ups too. In fact, it can be a great moms night out. Basic beading doesn't require any skill, but still gets your creative juices flowing as you piece together your own creation from a selection of beads.

Last week we wrote about doing a beading party at home. Whether you want to do a party, or just go out for a few hours of fun, there are several great places for beading in New York City.

Baby Fingers and Other Baby Sign Language Classes in NYC

Things to do with kids: Baby Fingers and Other Baby Sign Language Classes in NYC

[UPDATED: August 16, 2012]

Russian is my first language, so when I became a mom, I resolved that all of my children would be bilingual. I now have three kids and failed with all of them in their own way (not unlike what Tolstoy said about unhappy families). They are all definitely English dominant.

But I did do one thing right with my now eight- and five-year-olds: In addition to speaking Russian to them from birth, I also enrolled them in baby sign language classes. Not only were they able to communicate through sign months earlier than their mouths and tongues were capable of physically producing words, it created a perfect bridge from one language to the other. When I spoke to them in English (if their father was around), I signed the words. If I spoke to them in Russian (when we were alone), I signed the words. Making the same sign whether I was speaking English or Russian crystallized the point that all three–English, Russian and sign–referred to the same thing, and really helped them keep it all straight.

Here are some places where families can take baby sign language classes in New York City.

NYC Restaurants Where Kids Can Play

NYC Restaurants Where Kids Can Play

[UPDATED: July 30, 2012]

A few weeks ago, a reader emailed us and asked if we knew about any New York City restaurants where kids could play while parents ate. As she so bluntly put it: "My almost three-year-old boy wants nothing to do with sitting quietly." We've so been there.

While there are plenty of family-friendly restaurants in NYC, when it comes to keeping kids occupied, usually all they have to offer are crayons, coloring pages and maybe a chalkboard. So we set out to find places where kids can actually play, and we were pretty shocked by what we discovered. Most of the city's eat-and-play restaurants have closed over the past few years, including Boerum Hill's Cafe Boo Bah with its giant Duplo wall and Park Slope's PSbklyn, which had an arcade on its lower level. There are still restaurants that feature kids' entertainment, like sing-alongs, storytimes and magic shows, (we'll do a separate post on those in a few weeks), but very few with straight-up playtime.

Before you resign yourself to dining at Dave & Buster's or Chuck E. Cheese's, we did come up with three NYC restaurants that offer good food and fun for kids—one even has multiple locations in Manhattan.
