Tribeca Kids Neighborhood Guide

Washington Market Park TribecaAn industrial hub turned artist mecca, this triangle below Canal Street has recently emerged as one of NYC's swankiest neighborhoods. In addition to a thriving bar, gallery and restaurant scene, Tribeca boasts amazing attractions for families, including a pair of incredible parks, Washington Market Park and Pier 25 right on the Hudson River, a slew of high-end children's boutiques, great indoor places to play like the Downtown Community Center and high-tech obstacle course ExerBlast, and cool kiddie culture spots such as 92YTribeca and the Church Street School for Music and Art. It's also home to the Tribeca Film Festival, which hosts one of the city's biggest annual celebrations for kids, the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair. Here are our favorite things to do, see, try and experience with kids in Tribeca.

Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair 2013 & Other Free Tribeca Film Festival Events for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair 2013 & Other Free Tribeca Film Festival Events for NYC Kids

One of our favorite annual spring events, the Tribeca Film Festival, is set to take over downtown Wednesday, April 17 to Sunday, April 28, and as always there are lots of awesome activities for families. The popular Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair takes place on Saturday, April 27. While Mommy Poppins won't have a booth like we did a few years back, many of us plan on attending with our families. Yes it's always crowded but it's also packed with surprises, great things to do and cool entertainment.

In addition to the Family Festival Street Fair, which includes Tribeca/ESPN Sports Day, there will be "drive-in" movies, a mini-film fest of kid-made shorts as well as flicks you can watch online. Here's the scoop on these great events, all of which are FREE.

12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Things to do with kids: 12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Along with the mild weather comes a fresh crop of outdoor festivals, street fairs and carnivals, big annual favorites like two of our April Go List picks, the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as smaller community happenings.

These spring fests are a great way to entertain your family for just a few bucks—sometimes even for FREE. And the activities are really diverse: Introduce the kids to old-fashioned games, celebrate planet Earth, chow down on homemade treats or watch live performances by kiddie bands, puppet troupes and more. Plus, these events aren't just fun, they foster community by bringing folks together to support a school, playground, cultural institution or common cause.

Festival season doesn't kick off until this weekend but you can start planning right now. Here are 12 awesome events to put in your April calendar.

Foreign Language Camps for NYC Kids: Learn to Speak Spanish, French, Chinese and More

Things to do with kids: Foreign Language Camps for NYC Kids: Learn to Speak Spanish, French, Chinese and More

In our melting pot of a city, kids are exposed to lots of different languages, and the summer is a great time for children to try to pick up a new one. Whether your child yearns to master Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish, New York City is home to lots of language immersion summer camps. No textbooks at these programs. Instead, kids experience the usual seasonal fun—swimming, sports, arts—in their non-native tongue. The instructors and counselors are all fluent and not only teach kids the language, they expose them to the culture, too. Here are 10 language immersion summer day camps that will have your kids saying hola, bonjour or ciao in no time.

NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

Things to do with kids: NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

In the past, we've written about ways to host a summer urban pool party and shared our favorite outdoor NYC public pools. But this winter, a few of our readers wrote in asking where they could book an indoor pool party off-season. Swimming parties are certainly a decadent way to celebrate a birthday. The kids rip off their coats, jump in their bathing suits, hit in the water and get an instant taste of summer fun, regardless of what season it actually is.

Luckily, there are a bunch of indoor pools in NYC, and while most of them are only open to members or currently enrolled students, many offer party packages to the general public. These indoor swimming parties are also a great option in the summer since the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation pools don't offer birthday packages and have a long list of strictly enforced rules.

Jewish Museums in NYC: 5 Spots Where Kids Can Learn About Jewish History, Culture and Traditions

Things to do with kids: Jewish Museums in NYC: 5 Spots Where Kids Can Learn About Jewish History, Culture and Traditions

In our multicultural society, NYC kids are exposed to lots of different cultures. In fact, it's not uncommon for children of all backgrounds to want to celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanza, Christmas, Purim and Lunar New Year, and, perhaps, even teach their parents how it's done.

Exploring various ethnic traditions at school and with friends is fun, but there are also many New York City institutions where you can learn about different cultures in more depth. We've written about museums that focus on Himalayan and Chinese cultures, and now with Passover coming up this month, we thought it was a great time to highlight local institutions where children can learn about Jewish culture.

One thing to keep in mind when visiting a Jewish museum is that an exhibition of hand-crafted menorahs may be right around the corner from a huge sculpture commemorating the Holocaust, prompting kids to ask a bunch of difficult questions. For children who are ready, some of these institutions explore the the Holocaust in an appropriate way. Visiting spots like the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the Anne Frank Center are a lot more engaging than reading a dry text book but also less scary than watching graphic newsreel footage or looking at archival photos.

Here are five great NYC spots where kids can learn about Jewish culture, traditions and history.

Learn Spanish: Language Classes for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Learn Spanish: Language Classes for NYC Kids

Like many multicultural families in our melting pot of a city, we speak multiple languages in our home including English, Russian (that's where I'm from) and a couple of others thanks to Hebrew school and regular school. My oldest son is currently learning Spanish and is really loving it. He certainly gets many opportunities to practice it in daily life in NYC.

Many New York City public schools offer wonderful dual language Spanish programs (as well as other tongues). But there are also other options. NYC is filled with places where young kids can learn how to habla Español. Some spots offer foreign language classes for preschoolers, while others have lessons for elementary students, a great enrichment option if your child's school doesn't offer a second language. Here are 11 of our favorite Spanish classes for New York City kids:

Purim Parties for NYC Kids: Put on Your Costumes and Make Some Noise in Honor of the Festive Jewish Holiday

Things to do with kids: Purim Parties for NYC Kids: Put on Your Costumes and Make Some Noise in Honor of the Festive Jewish Holiday

You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy Purim. Often called the Jewish Halloween, Purim is a super-fun holiday when kids can do some of their favorite things, like dress up, play games, eat treats and make lots of noise.

Inspired by the great biblical tale of Queen Esther, who saved the Jews from annihilation by standing up to her husband's evil adviser Haman, Purim is celebrated by reading the Megillah (Esther's story), noshing on hamantaschen (triangular fruit-filled pastries meant to represent Haman's ears—gruesome but tasty) and rejoicing in a carnival-like atmosphere.

This year, Purim officially begins on the evening of Saturday, February 23 and ends at sundown the next day, and most Jewish cultural institutions are marking the holiday that weekend. We've rounded up the top 10 Purim celebrations in New York City, including colorful carnivals, holiday performances and even costume parades.

Tribeca Family-Friendly Restaurants: Where to Eat with Kids in Tribeca

Things to do with kids: Tribeca Family-Friendly Restaurants: Where to Eat with Kids in Tribeca

Our month-long focus on Tribeca finishes up with a roundup of our favorite family-friendly restaurants in the neighborhood. In general, places to eat in Tribeca either tend to be upscale or little holes-in-the-wall, with a handful of options in between. But since it is such a family-oriented area, many eateries welcome kids and even offer children's menus and special entertainment. Plus there's a wide range of cuisine to try, from good old American comfort food to French bistro dishes to authentic Cuban, Pakistani and Belgian eats, plus incredible bakeries.
