Staten Island

Staten Island is the largest borough in New York City, and yet the only thing most New Yorkers know about it is that the ferry ride is free. It's too bad because there are so many fun things for kids to do on Staten Island. Try getting off on the other side and you'll discover wonderful parks and beaches, a zoo, a children's museum and botanic garden, a TIbetan museum, and a trip back in time at Historic Richmond Town.

25 NYC Street Fairs, Festivals and Carnivals May 2012

Things to do with kids: 25 NYC Street Fairs, Festivals and Carnivals May 2012

There are street fairs and then there are street fairs. We don't mean those random ones that sell irregular socks and fried Oreos; we're talking about true community festivals. Each one is unique and reflects the character of its neighborhood, and many feature rides, performances, activities and food.

The hard part, of course, is knowing which ones are which, 'cause while we all love to stock up on cheap socks, we're not going to drag our family across town to do so. We've gone through the city's list of street fairs for the month of May and picked out the most promising ones, adding a few of our own favorites from years past and some new events that sound particularly cool. Best of all most of these festivals are FREE or are just a couple of bucks.

NYC families are gearing up to celebrate Easter, Passover and spring break. But you know what else is coming up? A new season of outdoor festivals, street fairs and carnivals, big annual favorites like the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as smaller community happenings.

These spring fests are a great way to entertain your family for just a few bucks—sometimes even for free. Spend the day playing old-fashioned games, chowing down on homemade treats and watching live performances by kiddie bands, puppet troupes and more. Plus, these events aren't just fun, they foster community by bringing folks together to support a school, playground or other common cause.

It's almost here! From Friday, April 6 through Sunday, April 15, New York City public school students will be on spring break. You know what that means: Time to start planning memorable and enriching adventures for the whole family (unless of course you're sending the kids to a spring break camp).

If you're thinking of heading out of town for a last-minute vacation, you can find lots of great family destinations on our brand-spanking-new Travel Site. But if a staycation is what you're after, you'll find there's plenty to keep you busy right here in NYC. The American Museum of Natural History, the New York Hall of Science and the Brooklyn Children's Museum all have new interactive exhibits for kids, the New York International Auto Show rolls into town and many popular family spots are presenting special programming during spring break. Plus, the Urban Park Rangers are hosting a bunch of free nature activities in our lovely city parks and local YMCAs are offerings free swimming lessons as part of Splash Week.

That's just a bit of all the fun going on. Read on for our favorite free or affordable activities going on during spring break in New York City.

Little League Baseball, Softball and T-Ball for New York City Kids 2012

Things to do with kids: Little League Baseball, Softball and T-Ball for New York City Kids 2012

The Yankees and the Mets aren’t the only ones stepping up to the plate this spring. Thousands of kids across the city will be eagerly dusting off their cleats in anticipation of Little League’s opening day on Saturday, March 31 (although some teams kick off in April).

Joining a Little League team (or any other youth baseball organization) is great fun for the entire family. Parent participation isn't just encouraged, it’s mandatory. Moms and dads volunteer to help manage the leagues, coach the teams, run the concession stands and maintain the grounds. Since it's nonprofit, the registration fees are relatively affordable. Most cost under $200 for the entire season, and that includes those nifty uniforms. If that's still out of your range, some leagues offer financial assistance.

Because of high enrollment, many teams have pretty strict geographic boundaries, so kids need to register based on their home address and proof is required. With opening day coming up, many teams are full, but some are still accepting late registration and most offer wait lists—and unlike other wait lists in this town, I hear that these actually move.

Find out how to join a T-Ball, baseball or softball team in New York City this spring. If your kids would prefer to cheer from the sidelines than get in the game, we've got the scoop on some great Little League opening day bashes, too.

NYC Summer Camps for Kids with Special Needs

Things to do with kids: NYC Summer Camps for Kids with Special Needs

It's tough to find the right summer camp for any kid. But if your child has special needs, like autism or ADHD, choosing a program can be especially nerve-racking. Children with special needs often shun sports or swimming, get spooked by new activities or field trips, and are prone to meltdowns when exposed to loud noises or bright lights. They also may need careful supervision to make sure they are being safe and playing well with their peers.

There are several New York City camps that cater to kids with special needs so they can have a fun-filled summer and make new friends. These programs understand that these kids may need time to adjust to a new summertime routine while getting them up and moving in healthy, productive ways.

Easter Egg Hunts for Kids in New York City 2012

Things to do with kids: Easter Egg Hunts for Kids in New York City 2012

Easter is coming up on Sunday, April 8 and what's the holiday without an outdoor (or indoor) egg hunt? You don't need a backyard to have one. There are plenty of egg hunts all over NYC, where kids can run through the soft spring grass searching for brightly colored orbs hidden amongst bushes and blooms.

Unfortunately, the Great Central Park Easter Egg Hunt has yet to be resurrected, but there are plenty of others on farms, at parks and in zoos. If you'd rather do it yourself, you can always bring your own Easter eggs and set up a little private hunt in a quiet corner of your local playground. If you opt for an egg hunt in your home, we recommend using plastic or blown eggs. You don't want to stumble across any stinky hard-boiled surprises come summer!

Get your kids hopping this spring at these awesome Easter egg hunts all over New York City.

Register for Free Swimming Lessons for NYC Kids and Adults

Things to do with kids: Register for Free Swimming Lessons for NYC Kids and Adults

Back in the warmer months, we told you about all of the wonderful free summer sports programs for kids in New York City, including no-cost swimming lessons. But did you know that the New York City Parks Department offers aquatic programs for adults as well as children all year-round? There are complimentary classes for pretty much everyone in all five boroughs, including people with special needs, preschoolers, seniors and every age in between.

In summer, lessons are held at outdoor facilities but during the school year, programs are offered at indoor pools on Saturdays and after school, and there's even a swim team for children ages 6-17. To try to snag a spot, you need to enter an online lottery, which is happening Friday, April 13 at noon through Wednesday, April 18 at midnight. We've got the scoop on how to do that, as well as additional information about these popular programs.
