NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

Things to do with kids: NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

In the past, we've written about ways to host a summer urban pool party and shared our favorite outdoor NYC public pools. But this winter, a few of our readers wrote in asking where they could book an indoor pool party off-season. Swimming parties are certainly a decadent way to celebrate a birthday. The kids rip off their coats, jump in their bathing suits, hit in the water and get an instant taste of summer fun, regardless of what season it actually is.

Luckily, there are a bunch of indoor pools in NYC, and while most of them are only open to members or currently enrolled students, many offer party packages to the general public. These indoor swimming parties are also a great option in the summer since the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation pools don't offer birthday packages and have a long list of strictly enforced rules.

Learn Spanish: Language Classes for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Learn Spanish: Language Classes for NYC Kids

Like many multicultural families in our melting pot of a city, we speak multiple languages in our home including English, Russian (that's where I'm from) and a couple of others thanks to Hebrew school and regular school. My oldest son is currently learning Spanish and is really loving it. He certainly gets many opportunities to practice it in daily life in NYC.

Many New York City public schools offer wonderful dual language Spanish programs (as well as other tongues). But there are also other options. NYC is filled with places where young kids can learn how to habla Español. Some spots offer foreign language classes for preschoolers, while others have lessons for elementary students, a great enrichment option if your child's school doesn't offer a second language. Here are 11 of our favorite Spanish classes for New York City kids:

New Bronx Ice Rink: Our Trip to the Van Cortlandt Park Ice Skating Rink

New Bronx Ice Rink: Our Trip to the Van Cortlandt Park Ice Skating Rink

Every year it seems like we hear about a new outdoor ice skating rink opening for the season in NYC. But the brand-new rink in Van Cortlandt Park is really notable since it's the only place to ice-skate in the entire Bronx!

As a proud Bronx mama, I was particularly excited to check out the rink with my family last weekend. Even though we're not that great on the ice, it was a thrill to glide (and stumble and fall) in our home borough.

Horseback Riding in NYC: Lessons and Rides for Kids

Things to do with kids: Horseback Riding in NYC: Lessons and Rides for Kids

My daughter turns five next month and so far she hasn't asked me to buy her a pony (good thing too as it's definitely not in our budget). However, she and my other two kids are constantly asking to go horseback riding. Although you might think that you need to leave New York City to hop on a horse, you don't. There are a number of stables in NYC that offer lessons and rides for aspiring cowboys and cowgirls.

Sadly, Claremont Riding Academy, the last remaining horse stable in Manhattan, closed in 2007 so there's no longer horseback riding in Central Park. However, there are stables in the other four boroughs that allow families to make like it's the Wild West.

Things to do with kids: Best Family-Friendly Restaurants in Riverdale

Our month-long focus on Riverdale and the surrounding neighborhoods continues with a look at family-friendly restaurants in the area. From Jewish deli staples like matzoh ball soup and stuffed cabbage to perfectly prepared burgers to the best carrot cake in New York City, here are our top spots for families to eat in Riverdale.

Riverdale with Kids: 30 Things to Do for NYC Families

Riverdale with Kids: 30 Things to Do for NYC Families

Located in the northwest section of the Bronx, Riverdale has long been a home for people looking to escape the city. Once settled with stately vacation houses of wealthy New Yorkers, the neighborhood transformed into a kind of suburb when commuting by train became possible. Today, Riverdale is highly prized for its historic houses as well as its prestigious private schools like Fieldston, Horace Mann and Riverdale Country School—known as the "Hill Schools" to some. The suburbs in the city feeling continues with relatively quiet enclaves of chain stores, shopping centers and upscale high-rises mixed in with nature-filled oases, old-school family-friendly restaurants, charming children's boutiques, synagogues and historic churches.

In June, we’ll be focusing on everything Riverdale has to offer residents and visitors. We will be including all of the northwest Bronx in our coverage from West 254th Street to Edsall Avenue, from the Hudson River to Broadway, which includes Spuyten Duyvil, Marble Hill and Kingsbridge.

Here are our top things to do with kids in Riverdale.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Celebrate National Poetry Month with NYC Kids

April is National Poetry Month (bet you didn't know that). Even if the last time you picked up a collection of adult poems was Sylvia Plath in college, chances are you read your kids rhyming stanzas by the likes of Dr. Seuss, Margaret Wise Brown or Shel Silverstein on a more regular basis. Little ones really respond to poetry; the rhymes help them learn to read, and older kids get into rap and slam poetry.

There are lots of special kid-friendly events going on in honor of National Poetry Month, including free poetry writing workshops, poetry slams and the annual Poem in Your Pocket day. But we've also got ways your family can celebrate the art of poetry year-round in New York City.
