Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

While spring brings outdoor festivals and fairs, and long days at NYC's playgrounds, it's also a great season for new museum exhibits. Alfresco sculpture installations at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the New York Botanical Garden, hands-on math and science fun at the New York Hall of Science, children's artwork at the Guggenheim, the Cloister's 75th anniversary and old-school music videos at the Museum of the Moving Image are just some of what's on tap this spring. Here are the top seven museum exhibits for families making their debuts this spring in New York City.

12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Things to do with kids: 12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Along with the mild weather comes a fresh crop of outdoor festivals, street fairs and carnivals, big annual favorites like two of our April Go List picks, the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as smaller community happenings.

These spring fests are a great way to entertain your family for just a few bucks—sometimes even for FREE. And the activities are really diverse: Introduce the kids to old-fashioned games, celebrate planet Earth, chow down on homemade treats or watch live performances by kiddie bands, puppet troupes and more. Plus, these events aren't just fun, they foster community by bringing folks together to support a school, playground, cultural institution or common cause.

Festival season doesn't kick off until this weekend but you can start planning right now. Here are 12 awesome events to put in your April calendar.

Free and Cheap Summer Camps for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Free and Cheap Summer Camps for NYC Kids

Even if your family's swimming in money like Uncle Scrooge (and if you are, congrats), we all appreciate a good bargain. Summer camp is an especially stressful financial issue because while we want our children to have a fun, rewarding and safe experience, we don't want to dig into our 401Ks to pay for it. One thing we've learned is that cost and quality don't always correlate. Some wonderful programs are subsidized by arts and education funding so that all children can experience the rich and amazing resources of this city.

Although there seem to be fewer completely free New York City summer camps than in years past, our list of excellent inexpensive camps keeps growing. One of those programs—the NYC Parks Experience Summer Day Camp, which costs $500 for the entire summer—holds its online lottery for spots this week! Read on to find out how to vie for a space and for info on many other free and bargain summer camps for NYC kids.

Chinese New Year for NYC Kids: Celebrate Lunar New Year with Free Parades and Festivals

Things to do with kids: Chinese New Year for NYC Kids: Celebrate Lunar New Year with Free Parades and Festivals

Chinese New Year is one of our favorite times in New York City—it's a great way to get immersed in another culture without buying an airplane ticket. Although the Year of the Snake officially begins on Sunday, February 10, Lunar New Year celebrations start in early February and continue throughout the month with many different Asian cultures and traditions represented.

This is a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy Chinese food, and learn about Chinese culture and stories. And with different Lunar New Year parades in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn, it's also a great opportunity to go out and explore a new-to-you neighborhood.

From beloved annual events like Chinatown's parade and firecracker celebration, to brand-new ways to ring in the Lunar New Year, here are the best ways to celebrate Chinese New Year with kids in NYC. Bonus: Lots of them are free.

Best NYC Kids' Concerts for Winter 2013: Rockin' Live Music Shows

Things to do with kids: Best NYC Kids' Concerts for Winter 2013: Rockin' Live Music Shows

Earlier this week, we shared our favorite NYC spots where kids can run around (or skate or swim or bike) indoors when it's too cold to play outside. But sometimes the best way for the entire family to get their sillies out is to jump around at a live music show. My daughter and I love discovering bands and musicians together, and we're always on the lookout for new-to-us groups to add to our ever-growing list of favorites.

There are so many cool kids' concert series in New York City—Bring Your Own Kid at 92YTribeca, Just Kidding at Symphony Space, the Tot Music Fest at Littlefield, to name a few—that you could easily see three shows every week (as my daughter would like to do)! But to give your dancing shoes (and your wallet) a break, we've rounded up our top 11 family concerts this winter. In addition to picks at all of the major series, we're also highlighting two local kindie rock faves who are playing the BAMkids Film Festival as well as a couple of totally free shows. In fact, almost all of these concerts cost less than $15 per person.

Trapeze Classes for NYC Kids: Where to Study Aerial Circus Arts

Things to do with kids: Trapeze Classes for NYC Kids: Where to Study Aerial Circus Arts

Some kids are content to sit and watch others fly gracefully above their heads. And then there are the ones who crave the adrenaline rush and, let's face it, the coolness of being able to say nonchalantly, "Yeah, I've totally been on a trapeze before."

If you've got one of those young thrill-seekers at home, it may be time to consider aerial arts classes. Flying trapeze isn't the only way to swoosh through the air. At these six circus spots, including the brand-new Aerial Arts NYC in Midtown East, kids can learn how to defy gravity on silks, ropes, the lyra (a.k.a. aerial hoop) and more, all on safe equipment under the watchful eye of experienced instructors.

NYC School Holiday Camps: Fun All-Day Kids' Programs for Election Day, Veterans Day and Beyond

Things to do with kids: NYC School Holiday Camps: Fun All-Day Kids' Programs for Election Day, Veterans Day and Beyond

Every fall we get emails from readers asking us to recommend school holiday camps for Election Day (Tuesday, November 6), Veterans Day (Monday, November 12) and all those other days when public schools are closed but many parents still need to work. (Columbus Day, Rosh Hashanah, Black Friday, we're looking at you.) While there are many wonderful mini-camps to choose from during the big school vacations like holiday, midwinter and spring breaks, it seems harder to find coverage on those one-off holidays that pop up throughout the academic year.

But we did the research and found that there actually are quality programs offering fun-filled one-day camps on many of these holidays, where kids can enjoy soccer, cooking, theater, robotics and chess. So don't take the day off from work: Send your kids to one of these cool-sounding holiday camps instead.

Outdoor Ice-Skating Rinks in New York City Including a Brand-new Bronx Rink

Things to do with kids: Outdoor Ice-Skating Rinks in New York City Including a Brand-new Bronx Rink

We feel slightly silly posting about outdoor ice-skating rinks when it hasn't yet dipped below 60 degrees. But NYC's only free rink, the Pond at Bryant Park, opens this Friday, Wollman in Central Park opens on Monday and Rock Center is already welcoming skaters! Plus the Bronx is finally getting its long-awaited ice-skating rink in Van Cortlandt Park. (Of course don't let this warm weather fool you: At some point it will get so cold, you'll probably want to hit an indoor ice-skating rink.)

All of these outdoor ice-skating rinks offer skating lessons and birthday party packages, and many also have ice hockey. Always check the rinks' official websites before heading out to verify that public skating hours haven't changed. There are often schedule changes over the holidays.
