Kids Cuts: Haircutting Salons for Boys and Girls in Brooklyn

Things to do with kids: Kids Cuts: Haircutting Salons for Boys and Girls in Brooklyn

Many parents hold off on the first haircut in order to prolong that glorious baby hair, but eventually it's time to get the kid a proper haircut. Brooklyn being baby central, there is no shortage of kiddie hair salons in the hood. These salons generally marry the vibe of an upscale salon with Santa's Workshop, packing toys and candy into every inch not dedicated to scissors and hair products. So, pack up your lil' hipster and head out to one of these cutters. Just make sure to carry an extra $20 for a post-cut treat.

Music Classes for Babies, Toddlers and Kids in Brooklyn

Things to do with kids: Music Classes for Babies, Toddlers and Kids in Brooklyn

[UPDATED: August 16, 2012]

In "Tangled Up In Blue," Bob Dylan sings of Montague St. that “There was music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air”. I’m not sure any of that is true of Brooklyn Heights now but there are certainly a lot of children’s music classes in the neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods of DUMBO, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and Boerum Hill. Maybe they can help your child turn into the next Bob Dylan . . . or maybe just bring some music to Montague St in 2035.

Shop Local at a New York Flea Market or Craft Fair

Things to do with kids: Shop Local at a New York Flea Market or Craft Fair

Why buy locally? Well, it ensures good independent businesses are here for the long run; it’s beneficial for the environment; and you can get some pretty cool one-of-a-kind items. Finally, these businesses provide excellent learning opportunities: Use shopping trips as a way to educate your child about how local companies operate. If you're already buying locally, take it a step further by increasing the products you purchase. You'll be surprised at how many fine items are made right here in New York City.

One way to shop locally is to visit the flea markets and craft fairs where local artisans and retailers often sell their wares. Brooklyn seems to be the epi-center of these markets now. Below are some of the best markets to buy locally, plus, surprisingly, an online source for local shopping as well.
