J.J. Byrne Playground Reopens in Park Slope and It's Definitely a Destination Playground

J.J. Byrne Playground Reopens in Park Slope and It's Definitely a Destination Playground

A few months ago when we were spotlighting Park Slope, we mentioned how much we were looking forward to the reopening of J.J. Byrne Playground. After a year of work and many millions of dollars, the revamped play spot debuted last Friday and my four-year-old daughter and I went to check it out.

Due to its location in Washington Park next to the historic Old Stone House, the playground has a Colonial theme. My kid had a blast exploring this marvelous playground and so did I. As you can see from our slide show, a lot of the equipment is just as much fun to look at as play on.

Farm-to-table: Hands-on Planting and Harvesting Summer Camps for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Farm-to-table: Hands-on Planting and Harvesting Summer Camps for NYC Kids

If your child loves digging in the dirt and messing around in the kitchen as much as mine does, then camps that offer planting, harvesting and cooking activities are a summer dream come true. Even for kids who are less, shall we say, dirt-inclined, these programs offer a wonderful opportunity to learn about the farm-to-table movement as they harvest fruits and vegetables right here in NYC. Here are five programs where city kids can get a literal taste of farm life.

25 NYC Street Fairs, Festivals and Carnivals May 2012

Things to do with kids: 25 NYC Street Fairs, Festivals and Carnivals May 2012

There are street fairs and then there are street fairs. We don't mean those random ones that sell irregular socks and fried Oreos; we're talking about true community festivals. Each one is unique and reflects the character of its neighborhood, and many feature rides, performances, activities and food.

The hard part, of course, is knowing which ones are which, 'cause while we all love to stock up on cheap socks, we're not going to drag our family across town to do so. We've gone through the city's list of street fairs for the month of May and picked out the most promising ones, adding a few of our own favorites from years past and some new events that sound particularly cool. Best of all most of these festivals are FREE or are just a couple of bucks.

Mother's Day Brunch in NYC 2012: Mama's Choice

Things to do with kids: Mother's Day Brunch in NYC 2012: Mama's Choice

Figuring out where to eat on Mother's Day always gives me heartburn. Trying to find a place that will please me, my husband, my six-year-old and my own mother (since she lives in NYC, too) is quite a challenge.

So this year, instead of stressing out about where I'll end up on Sunday, May 13, I decided to turn to the experts: my fellow NYC moms. In addition to updating our list of fancy Mother's Day brunch spots in New York City, we asked our always knowledgeable Mommy Poppins readers to recommend their favorite restaurants for the holiday—or any day.

Best NYC Kids' Concerts for Spring 2012: 13 Live Family Music Shows

Things to do with kids: Best NYC Kids' Concerts for Spring 2012: 13 Live Family Music Shows

Last week we told you about 13 wonderful kids' shows playing in NYC this spring. Today we're sharing the best kids' bands rocking out on city stages this season.

My four-year-old daughter and I love seeing live concerts, and some of our favorite family bands are playing over the next few months, like the Deedle Deedle Dees and Alastair Moock. I'm especially excited to introduce my kid to a few groups she hasn't heard yet, like Bing Bang Boom and the Bari Koral Family Rock Band, at the annual Kindiefest concert. Here are 13 NYC kids' concerts to put in your calendar, including FREE shows from Hot Peas N' Butter, Elizabeth Mitchell and The Rockdoves.

10 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2012

Things to do with kids: 10 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2012

NYC families are gearing up to celebrate Easter, Passover and spring break. But you know what else is coming up? A new season of outdoor festivals, street fairs and carnivals, big annual favorites like the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as smaller community happenings.

These spring fests are a great way to entertain your family for just a few bucks—sometimes even for free. Spend the day playing old-fashioned games, chowing down on homemade treats and watching live performances by kiddie bands, puppet troupes and more. Plus, these events aren't just fun, they foster community by bringing folks together to support a school, playground or other common cause.

Festival season doesn't kick off for a few weeks, but we're happy to help you start planning now. Here are 10 awesome events to put in your April calendar.

Little League Baseball, Softball and T-Ball for New York City Kids 2012

Things to do with kids: Little League Baseball, Softball and T-Ball for New York City Kids 2012

The Yankees and the Mets aren’t the only ones stepping up to the plate this spring. Thousands of kids across the city will be eagerly dusting off their cleats in anticipation of Little League’s opening day on Saturday, March 31 (although some teams kick off in April).

Joining a Little League team (or any other youth baseball organization) is great fun for the entire family. Parent participation isn't just encouraged, it’s mandatory. Moms and dads volunteer to help manage the leagues, coach the teams, run the concession stands and maintain the grounds. Since it's nonprofit, the registration fees are relatively affordable. Most cost under $200 for the entire season, and that includes those nifty uniforms. If that's still out of your range, some leagues offer financial assistance.

Because of high enrollment, many teams have pretty strict geographic boundaries, so kids need to register based on their home address and proof is required. With opening day coming up, many teams are full, but some are still accepting late registration and most offer wait lists—and unlike other wait lists in this town, I hear that these actually move.

Find out how to join a T-Ball, baseball or softball team in New York City this spring. If your kids would prefer to cheer from the sidelines than get in the game, we've got the scoop on some great Little League opening day bashes, too.

12 Best Brooklyn Craft Studios for Kids

Things to do with kids: 12 Best Brooklyn Craft Studios for Kids

March may be National Craft Month but we love crafting all year round. One thing we don't love though is the mess crafting makes in our already cluttered apartment.

Luckily my family lives in Brooklyn, which just may be the crafting mecca of the world (or at least New York City). There are a slew of craft studios where kids can paint pottery, work with wood, try fiber arts like knitting and sewing, or make something more offbeat (robot trash can anyone?)—and best of all, someone else cleans up after them. Although some spots require that you sign up for an entire semester of classes, many offer drop-in options for occasional crafters, summer camps, school break programs and even birthday party packages. Here are our top 12 Brooklyn craft studios where kids can get creative.
