Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Winter 2013: 12 Awesome Installations for Families

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Winter 2013: 12 Awesome Installations for Families

We love taking the kids to NYC's world-class museums at any time of year. But in the dead of winter, a trip to explore awesome and often interactive installations makes for a cool (yet warm) family outing.

We found a dozen fun exhibits that are worth checking out this season. From hands-on action at the Brooklyn Children's Museum's Big Adventure and Tony Hawk's Rad Science at the New York Hall of Science, to playable video games at the Museum of the Moving Image's Spacewar!, to an indoor tropical paradise at the New York Botanical Garden, to funky contemporary art at the Guggenheim's Gutai retrospective, here are the best museum exhibits for families this winter.

Holiday Break Camps for NYC Kids: Science, Nature, Chess and Other Enrichment Programs

Things to do with kids: Holiday Break Camps for NYC Kids: Science, Nature, Chess and Other Enrichment Programs

Starting Friday, December 21 (or even earlier for private school students), New York City kids are in for a nice, long holiday break. Parents, not so much—especially if you need to work on many of the days the kids are off from school. Luckily, NYC has plenty of holiday camps to keep children entertained while you head to the office, to the grocery store or to the spa (hey, it could happen).

Although in past posts we've lumped different kinds of school break camps together, from arts to athletics to academics, this time around we're focusing specifically on enrichment programs, where kids can get hands-on experience in robotics, chess, fashion, foreign languages and even construction. Some of the camps sound so cool, we wish they took grown-ups. You can find even more December break camps and other seasonal fun in our Holiday Guide.

NYC School Holiday Camps: Fun All-Day Kids' Programs for Election Day, Veterans Day and Beyond

Things to do with kids: NYC School Holiday Camps: Fun All-Day Kids' Programs for Election Day, Veterans Day and Beyond

Every fall we get emails from readers asking us to recommend school holiday camps for Election Day (Tuesday, November 6), Veterans Day (Monday, November 12) and all those other days when public schools are closed but many parents still need to work. (Columbus Day, Rosh Hashanah, Black Friday, we're looking at you.) While there are many wonderful mini-camps to choose from during the big school vacations like holiday, midwinter and spring breaks, it seems harder to find coverage on those one-off holidays that pop up throughout the academic year.

But we did the research and found that there actually are quality programs offering fun-filled one-day camps on many of these holidays, where kids can enjoy soccer, cooking, theater, robotics and chess. So don't take the day off from work: Send your kids to one of these cool-sounding holiday camps instead.

Sensory Gyms in Manhattan: Eight Spots for Physical, Occupational and Other Sensory Therapy for Kids

Things to do with kids: Sensory Gyms in Manhattan: Eight Spots for Physical, Occupational and Other Sensory Therapy for Kids

Earlier this year, we rounded up some of our favorite sensory gyms in Brooklyn. Since then we've launched our Special Needs Guide and gotten many requests for a post about sensory gyms in Manhattan. Well we heard you, and here it is!

The good good news is, Manhattan has a bunch of amazing sensory gyms that offer a fun and safe environment where children can work on their core strength, balance, language, sensory integration, behavior, attention and social interaction skills. The bad news? There are so many options, picking the best sensory gym for your child’s particular needs may feel like finding a needle in a haystack. This list is by no means comprehensive. However, as the mom to a tween with special needs who's been to quite a few of these spots, I believe these eight Manhattan sensory gyms are a great place to start.

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Fall 2012: 13 Awesome Installations for Families

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Fall 2012: 13 Awesome Installations for Families

So far this month we've told you about the best kids' concerts and family theater shows debuting this autumn. Now we finish up our fall culture coverage with a roundup of kid-friendly museum exhibits that are opening over the next few months.

While the Brooklyn Children's Museum, the Children's Museum of Manhattan and the Children's Museum of the Arts are all unveiling cool new interactive installations, there are a bunch of awesome exhibits at "adult" museums that are sure to please school-age kids and their parents, like the Guggenheim's Picasso retrospective and the Metropolitan Museum's show of artists inspired by Pop Art great Andy Warhol. Plus the Toy Museum of NY is moving to a brand-new Brooklyn location and original illustrations by Beatrix Potter will be on display at the Morgan. Here are 13 family-friendly exhibits that we're looking forward to taking our kids to this fall.

NYC Playgrounds with Shade: Shady Park Benches and Equipment

Things to do with kids: NYC Playgrounds with Shade: Shady Park Benches and Equipment

Every summer we get emails from readers asking us which NYC playgrounds have the most shade. While kids can always cool off in the sprinklers, we parents are stuck baking in the sun all day—this week I've been reduced to lugging a parasol to the playground and it really doesn't go with my sneakers.

Although we know of a couple playgrounds that offer exceptional amounts of shade—Hippo Playground in Riverside Park comes to mind—we decided to ask our readers if they knew of any super-shady playgrounds in New York City. After clarifying that we were talking about shelter from the sun's rays, not sketchy parks, they came through with a number of great suggestions.

Math Camps and Summer Math Classes in New York CIty

Things to do with kids: Math Camps and Summer Math Classes in New York CIty

[UPDATED: February 23, 2013]  While there's always a big push for summer reading, kids' math skills don't get much of a workout while school's on break. Come September, many students find they've forgotten a lot of what they had learned and start out the academic year behind.

In order to make sure your kids' math knowledge doesn't melt away in the summer sun, our education blogger, Blythe, has rounded up New York City camps and classes where students can put two and two together—and hopefully do a lot more complicated equations. Our picks include competitive math programs, individualized instruction and remedial classes.

Mother's Day Brunch in NYC 2013: Mama's Choice

Things to do with kids: Mother's Day Brunch in NYC 2013: Mama's Choice

[UPDATED: April 30, 2013] Figuring out where to eat on Mother's Day always gives me heartburn. Trying to find a place that will please me, my husband, my six-year-old and my own mother (since she lives in NYC, too) is quite a challenge.

So this year, instead of stressing out about where I'll end up on Sunday, May 12, I decided to turn to the experts: my fellow NYC moms. In addition to updating our list of fancy Mother's Day brunch spots in New York City, we asked our always knowledgeable Mommy Poppins readers to recommend their favorite restaurants for the holiday—or any day.

For even more family-friendly brunch suggestions, check out our brand-new NYC Kid-Friendly Restaurant Guide.
