Owl Hollow Fields Opens in Staten Island's Freshkills Park

Owl Hollow Fields Opens in Staten Island's Freshkills Park

We admit, we don't usually give the opening of a new soccer field a full post on Mommy Poppins (much as we love outdoor sports). But the debut of the long-delayed Owl Hollow Fields on Staten Island is big news in the borough since it's part of the massive Freshkills Park overall.

Once the 2,200-acre Freshkills Park is finished, it will be almost three times as big as Central Park! Progress is slow but it is happening. Last year, my family and I visited Schmul Park in Freshkills. And last week, we went to check out Owl Hollow Fields, which debuted in April just in time for spring soccer season.

Staten Island Kids Party Places: 10 More Great Birthday Ideas

Things to do with kids: Staten Island Kids Party Places: 10 More Great Birthday Ideas

In the past we've touted Staten Island as a great place to find a birthday party bargain. But there are so many fun Staten Island party spots, we thought it was time to do a new roundup.

Not only do Staten Island parties tend to be some of the least expensive options in NYC, they often offer the kind of fun you usually only find in the 'burbs, like bumper cars, go-carts and massive video game arcades. So in addition to our original list of Staten Island party places, here are 10 more spots where you can throw a memorable birthday bash. You can find even more options in our Party Guide.

30 Easter Egg Hunts for Kids in New York City 2013

Things to do with kids: 30 Easter Egg Hunts for Kids in New York City 2013

Easter is coming up on Sunday, March 31, 2013 and what's the holiday without an outdoor egg hunt? You don't need a backyard to have one. There are plenty of egg hunts all over NYC, where kids can run through the soft spring grass searching for brightly colored orbs hidden amongst bushes and blooms.

We've got the scoop on the best Easter egg hunts in NYC. Most are outdoors in parks, zoos, gardens and farms, but a few are indoors at museums and other tot spots. Plus a lot of these fetes come with extra seasonal fun, like face painting, family concerts and spring crafts. Arrive early! The eggs never stick around for long.

If you'd rather do it yourself, you can always bring your own Easter eggs and set up a little private hunt in a quiet corner of your local playground. If you opt for an egg hunt in your home, we recommend using plastic or blown eggs. You don't want to stumble across any stinky hard-boiled surprises come summer!

Here are our top Easter egg hunts in New York City.

New Staten Island Playground: Schmul Park in Freshkills Park

New Staten Island Playground: Schmul Park in Freshkills Park

Schmul Park isn't new; it's a revamp of a drab play spot that was sorely in need of a makeover. And while the overhauled park may not qualify as a Destination Playground, the vibrant and colorful romping spot is certainly a welcome addition to the neighborhood—even in the cool fall weather it's packed every day after school!

In addition to the playground, the new $6.5. Schmul Park features a pair of handball courts, basketball courts, a softball field, an open lawn for picnicking or lounging, lovely native plantings, a comfort station with bathroom (and changing tables, yay!), and a pathway that will serve as the entrance to Staten Island's 2,200-acre Freshkills Park, which is currently being developed.

Dutchess County Fair and Other Fun New York State Fairs Including Three in NYC

Things to do with kids: Dutchess County Fair and Other Fun New York State Fairs Including Three in NYC

Summer is quickly coming to a close, but you still have time for a few last flings. How about hitting a fun-filled county fair or country festival? There are lots of fantastic annual fests at this time of year, like the Dutchess County Fair, the New York Renaissance Faire and the New York State Fair, most a short drive (or train or bus ride) from New York City. There are even three county fairs right here in NYC!

These fairs let city kids get face time with farm animals like chickens, goats, pigs and cows, hop on cool carnival rides, groove to live music, and enjoy other entertainment and activities. They're good old-fashioned fun for the whole family, and the perfect way to say goodbye to summer. Here are nine county fairs and festivals near or in New York City.

Staten Island's Greenbelt for NYC Kids: An Awesome Carousel, Cycling, Hiking, Archery and a Living History Museum

Staten Island's Greenbelt for NYC Kids: An Awesome Carousel, Cycling, Hiking, Archery and a Living History Museum

At 2,800 acres, Staten Island’s Greenbelt is one of the largest public parks in New York City. Like Central Park in Manhattan, Brooklyn's Prospect Park, the Bronx's Van Cortlandt Park and Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, the Greenbelt is considered one of NYC's flagship green spaces. However, it's actually several parks linked together in Staten Island’s interior, including the popular Willowbrook Park, home to the Carousel for All Children, the wild High Rock Park and Bloodroot Valley named for its large population of signature flowers.

The Greenbelt makes for a great staycation destination. It's jam-packed with attractions, including 30 miles of groomed hiking trails, a nature center, a recreation center, a public golf course, a merry-go-round, barbecue grills, a lake for fishing, a living history museum and playgrounds. It's also filled with a wide variety of plants, flowers and wildlife like Wood Ducks, Great Blue Herons, muskrats, hawks, owls, woodpeckers, frogs and turtles.

It's possible to see most of the Greenbelt's big attractions on foot in one day—my family and I didn't manage it but we met an intrepid father-son team who were doing just that! But it's more relaxing to choose one area to explore at your leisure. If you decide to do it all in one day, there are parking lots throughout the Greenbelt and various MTA buses circle the park. Here are our top 14 things to do in the Greenbelt with kids.

Ice-Skating Summer Camps for NYC Kids: Ice Hockey and Figure Skating Programs

Things to do with kids: Ice-Skating Summer Camps for NYC Kids: Ice Hockey and Figure Skating Programs

When considering athletic camps for summertime fun, the mind usually turns to swimming, baseball, tennis or other outdoor team sports. But what if your kids prefer their summer vacation served ice cold?

That's totally doable in NYC even when the temperatures are well above freezing. Five of our city's wonderful indoor ice-skating rinks offer figure skating or ice hockey summer camps for your budding Michelle Kwan or Wayne Gretzky.

NYC Summer Camps for Kids with Special Needs

Things to do with kids: NYC Summer Camps for Kids with Special Needs

[UPDATED: February 24, 2013]  It's tough to find the right summer camp for any kid. But if your child has special needs, like autism or ADHD, choosing a program can be especially nerve-racking. Children with special needs often shun sports or swimming, get spooked by new activities or field trips, and are prone to meltdowns when exposed to loud noises or bright lights. They also may need careful supervision to make sure they are being safe and playing well with their peers.

There are several New York City camps that cater to kids with special needs so they can have a fun-filled summer and make new friends. These programs understand that these kids may need time to adjust to a new summertime routine while getting them up and moving in healthy, productive ways.
