Long Island City Kids Neighborhood Guide

A sprawling area located at the southwestern tip of Queens, Long Island City is actually many neighborhoods rolled into one. Overall, LIC has an industrial-turned-artsy vibe, with old factories and buildings reincarnated as TV and movie studios, galleries, funky museums and fancy condos.

Although there aren't a ton of kid-specific attractions in Long Island City yet, there are lots of fun things for families to do together, like exploring MoMA's PS1, taking a free art workshop at the outdoor Socrates Sculpture Park, romping in the state-of-the-art playground and sprinklers at Gantry Plaza State Park, and eating at one of the area's many casual eateries. Our guide to Long Island City includes info on all of these as well as many other suggestions for ways to spend a day (or more) in Long Island City, Queens.

Best Ice Cream and Ices in Queens: 9 Sweet Scoop Spots

Things to do with kids: Best Ice Cream and Ices in Queens: 9 Sweet Scoop Spots

While Queens may not be chock-full of high-end gourmet creameries like Manhattan and Brooklyn, that doesn't mean we've only got Mister Softee. From authentic old-fashioned sofa fountains serving up insane sundaes to cool new ma-and-pa parlors like Long Island City's Malu, Queens has got its share of ice cream places worth traveling to—whether you live in the borough or are just passing through. These nine sweet spots are all family favorites for me and my brood. And if you don't dig ice cream, don't worry: Some of these shops are best known for other cold treats like Italian ices—a staple of my home borough.

Sensory City: New Long Island City Play Space for Kids of All Abilities

Sensory City: New Long Island City Play Space for Kids of All Abilities

An amazing state-of-the-art play space has opened up in Long Island City, but it's no run-of-the-mill kiddie gym. Sensory City is a sensory gym and pediatric occupational therapy practice where kids can enjoy a wide variety of stimulating stations including a swing, a ball pit, a play castle and even a zip line.

While Sensory City was specifically designed to help visitors work on their sensory, fine motor, gross motor and communication skills, children of all abilities are welcome and can benefit from the experiences the gym has to offer. My family and I recently dropped by for an open play session, and my kids had a blast. After all, who doesn't love to romp in a ball pit?

Queens Party Places: 10 More Great Kids' Birthday Party Ideas

Things to do with kids: Queens Party Places: 10 More Great Kids' Birthday Party Ideas

Back in 2010, we posted our first roundup of cool Queens party places, including favorites like Astoria Sports Complex and the Queens Zoo. But there are so many other awesome birthday spots in the borough—including a few that recently opened like Astoria's Kids Playhouse and Oliloli Studio in Forest Hills—that we decided to do a second post with 10 more options.

These Queens birthday party places cater to all kinds of kids, from active to artsy to animal lovers. And as a Queens mom with two children myself, I've been to many of these spots personally. You can find additional birthday inspiration in our Party Guide.

Explore Offbeat Art in an Old Bank Building for Free in Long Island City

Explore Offbeat Art in an Old Bank Building for Free in Long Island City

How Much Do I Owe You? is one of those offbeat, one-of-a-kind art installations we love to explore with our kids. This free site-specific exhibit is set inside the long abandoned Bank of Manhattan Tower (a.k.a. the Clock Tower) in Long Island City, Queens, and the works on display explore issues of currency, value and exchange in our society. Or—as I told my son after he responded, "No thanks" to my invitation to check it out—"It's a show about money in a cool old bank building." "Oh, in that case, let's go."

Destination Family Restaurants in Queens: 10 Kid-Friendly Eateries Worth the Trip

Things to do with kids: Destination Family Restaurants in Queens: 10 Kid-Friendly Eateries Worth the Trip

As a proud Queens native, I'm always looking for new ways to encourage others (including my own family) to explore my home borough. And since it's famous for being culturally diverse, a do-it-yourself food tour is a great way to get a taste of all the different neighborhoods.

Queens boasts some of the best kid-friendly restaurants in New York City—and I'm not just saying that because I was raised here. You can introduce your children to a wide variety of authentic cuisine at reasonable prices, and the portions are so big you always end up with leftovers to take home. Plus there are off-the-beaten path gems that have incredible kid appeal, like coffee house Waltz-Astoria and its family concerts and old New York soda fountains Eddie's Sweet Shop and Jahn's.

I thought about all of the places I've eaten in Queens over the years and came up with my personal list of the top ten restaurants, bakeries and ice cream parlors that are all worth schlepping the kids to, even if you live in another borough. See if your favorites made the cut and feel free to share your additions in the comments as I know there are many, many more.

Indoor Ice-Skating Rinks in New York City

Things to do with kids: Indoor Ice-Skating Rinks in New York City

As much as we love ice-skating outside, sometimes it's just too cold (or hot) for an outdoor rink. That's why it's good to have indoor alternatives for skating. In fact, some in-the-know parents with young skate enthusiasts tell me they prefer indoor rinks because the quality of the ice is better, making for a smoother glide, which is especially helpful for newbies.

Here are six NYC indoor ice-skating rinks to check out this winter, or all year-round! They're even open in summer if you ever need to cool down.

See Some of NYC's Best Graffiti at 5 Pointz in Long Island City Before It's Gone

See Some of NYC's Best Graffiti at 5 Pointz in Long Island City Before It's Gone

Although we've raved about graffiti Mecca 5 Pointz Aerosol Art Center many times in the past, we've never actually devoted a post to it, not even when Long Island City was our neighborhood of the month. And since this New York City landmark will most likely be demolished next year, we figure now's the time to encourage families to take their kids to see this amazing, constantly changing outdoor art installation before it's just a memory.

Since 1993, aerosol artists have been coming from around the world to decorate this 200,000-square-foot warehouse, one of the few places in NYC where graffiti artists and taggers can legally show off their skills. 5 Pointz helped spark the transformation of Long Island City from an industrial area into an edgy arts community. Now, with the neighborhood changing again, 5 Pointz is slated to be replaced with a pair of residential apartment buildings. But there's still time to take your family to see this one-of-a-kind attraction.

Long Island City Museums with Kids: Spending the Day at MoMA PS1, the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park

Long Island City Museums with Kids: Spending the Day at MoMA PS1, the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park

One of the main reasons visitors go to Long Island City in Queens is to explore the neighborhood's vibrant arts scene. In addition to a slew of galleries and graffiti Mecca 5 Pointz, LIC has three big museums: MoMA PS1, the Noguchi Museum and outdoor oasis Socrates Sculpture Park.

Even though all three culture spots regularly offer kids programming and classes, we know some families wonder whether they're worth the trip—especially since PS1 isn't within walking distance of the other two (which are just a block apart). So as part of our month-long focus on Long Island City, my five-year-old son and I set off on an LIC art tour to see if we could hit all three in one day. We had so much fun, we agreed that even though we live over in Brooklyn, we would do it again soon.
