Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

While spring brings outdoor festivals and fairs, and long days at NYC's playgrounds, it's also a great season for new museum exhibits. Alfresco sculpture installations at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the New York Botanical Garden, hands-on math and science fun at the New York Hall of Science, children's artwork at the Guggenheim, the Cloister's 75th anniversary and old-school music videos at the Museum of the Moving Image are just some of what's on tap this spring. Here are the top seven museum exhibits for families making their debuts this spring in New York City.

Best Sledding Hills in New York City

Things to do with kids: Best Sledding Hills in New York City

Many of my favorite memories from growing up in NYC involve snow days. The outdoor parking lot on my corner would plow all the snow into one corner, making our own private sledding hill. We would use garbage can lids or pieces of cardboard to sled down this very short, but very steep hill. We also liked to tunnel in between the parked cars to create forts.

Ah, but times have changed. My street urchin days are over and now we use real sleds and real hills to go sledding. Here are some of the best places to go sledding in New York City, as recommended by my family and our readers. Feel free to add your favorites in the comments.

NYC Playgrounds with Shade: Shady Park Benches and Equipment

Things to do with kids: NYC Playgrounds with Shade: Shady Park Benches and Equipment

Every summer we get emails from readers asking us which NYC playgrounds have the most shade. While kids can always cool off in the sprinklers, we parents are stuck baking in the sun all day—this week I've been reduced to lugging a parasol to the playground and it really doesn't go with my sneakers.

Although we know of a couple playgrounds that offer exceptional amounts of shade—Hippo Playground in Riverside Park comes to mind—we decided to ask our readers if they knew of any super-shady playgrounds in New York City. After clarifying that we were talking about shelter from the sun's rays, not sketchy parks, they came through with a number of great suggestions.

Best NYC Public Schools: Dual Language Programs

Things to do with kids: Best NYC Public Schools: Dual Language Programs

We're always adding new bloggers to our Mommy Poppins team, and we're thrilled to welcome NYC schools and education expert Blythe Grossberg to the fold. Blythe will be writing posts about NYC schools. For her first post, Blythe shares info about one of the hidden gems of the New York City public school system: dual language programs.

Available at all grade levels from pre-K to 12th grade, dual language programs are open to English language learners (ELL) and students whose first language is English. A bilingual education can help kids succeed in our multicultural world.

Learn more about how dual language programs work and some of the best bilingual programs in NYC public schools.

Free Winter Fun at New York City Nature Centers

Things to do with kids: Free Winter Fun at New York City Nature Centers

[UPDATED: JANUARY 25, 2013]

Yes, New York City is home to skyscrapers and sidewalks galore, but our city is also made up of beaches, forests, marshlands and glacier formations. There are animals everywhere, too: seals in the harbor, red-tailed hawks on Fifth Avenue, raccoons in Central Park and even occasionally coyotes. And since we are located on the eastern flyway, our skies are filled with hundreds of different species of birds. My family is passionate about the natural world around us and so are many other New Yorkers, as evidenced by the myriad of nature centers available to us throughout the city.

Nature centers are a great way to while away a winter’s day and maybe even learn something new about the city. Drop in during their open hours and check out wonderful exhibits featuring animals, plants, history and geography. Or attend one of the many special events or organized group activities going on all winter. The best part is that most nature centers don't charge an entrance fee (although donations are accepted) so it's an affordable outing the whole family can enjoy.

Bald Eagle Viewing in NYC: Winter Nature Fun for Kids

Things to do with kids: Bald Eagle Viewing in NYC: Winter Nature Fun for Kids

[UPDATED: DECEMBER 31, 2012]

Seeing a bald eagle in the wild is an incredible experience. I can still vividly remember my encounter with the majestic bird at Umbagog Lake State Park in New Hampshire back in August 2001. With their striking white heads and tails, and massive wingspans, mature bald eagles are an impressive and unforgettable sight.

Like most birds, bald eagles fly south for the winter and pass right through our neck of the woods by soaring down the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. They begin their migration in December, with the highest concentration of eagles visible during the months of January and February.

Eagle viewing is a popular winter activity for bird and nature lovers in and near New York City. We've got the scoop on how your family can marvel at our national bird, either by joining an organized event or heading out on your own.

Best of New York City for Kids 2011: Our Favorite New NYC Spots

Things to do with kids: Best of New York City for Kids 2011: Our Favorite New NYC Spots

Happy New Year! New Year's is always a special time for Mommy Poppins because I started the site as a New Year's resolution five years ago (happy fifth birthday, MP!), and I wrote our popular list of 100 Things to Do in NYC with Kids the following New Year's. (Apparently I'm highly motivated by New Year's, who knew?). Unfortunately, I don't have anything that exciting up my sleeve today, but couldn't let January 1 go by without acknowledging some of the amazing new destinations we wrote about in 2011.

As we all know, NYC is constantly evolving with new attractions opening (and closing) all the time. While the pace of new kid biz openings seems to have slowed from its heyday a few years ago, there are still incredible places popping up in New York City. If you follow the site religiously, you will know about all of these, but for those of you who may have missed one or two of the approximately 500 posts we wrote this year, here's a rundown of our favorite new NYC attractions for families that opened in 2011.

Holiday Markets in New York City 2012

Things to do with kids: Holiday Markets in New York City 2012

[UPDATED: NOVEMBER 13, 2012]

New York City is a flurry of holiday shopping this time of year. There are wonderful seasonal markets all over town selling crafts, unique boutique goods, food and more. These cool local spots aren't just in Manhattan either; there are several markets in the outer boroughs, too.

Unlike the craziness of Black Friday, these shopping experiences are perfect for children. A few places even offer activities like pictures with Santa and craft projects for the kiddies. Plus, you're often supporting local businesses and artisans. We love shopping local so much, we made it the focus of our Holiday Gift Guide.

Read on for our round-up of eleven New York City holiday markets. And if you're looking for even more crafty options around town, check out our post on NYC holiday craft fairs.
