Karaoke for NYC Kids: Family-friendly Singing Spots

Things to do with kids: Karaoke for NYC Kids: Family-friendly Singing Spots

Ah, karaoke, a favorite activity for rowdy office parties and over-21 birthdays. The last time I went to a karaoke place, my coat ended up on the floor, soaking in a puddle of beer. It was a fun night out... but one I couldn't share with my children.

But karaoke-loving kids don't need to confine their singing to the shower. They can enjoy an authentic experience, minus the R-rated lyrics and copious amounts of alcohol, at a number of New York City karaoke spots that have family-friendly hours during the daytime. Many of these places even offer children's party packages where the bottomless pitchers of beer are replaced with juice or soda.

Cheap (and a Few Free) Dance Classes for NYC Kids: Ballet, Flamenco and Other Children's Programs in Manhattan

Things to do with kids: Cheap (and a Few Free) Dance Classes for NYC Kids: Ballet, Flamenco and Other Children's Programs in Manhattan

With a son who is totally into ballet, it wasn't long before his little sister wanted lessons, too. While I try to be fair when it comes to extracurricular activities for my kids, enrolling in multiple classes really adds up, especially with dance, which can quickly go from once a week to twice a week to oh my God, we're living in the studio!

As a result, I'm always on the hunt for the most reasonably priced dance classes in New York City. And today, I'm sharing what I've found with all of you.

Kids Haircuts: Hair Salons for Boys and Girls in Manhattan

Things to do with kids: Kids Haircuts: Hair Salons for Boys and Girls in Manhattan

While moms may find a trip to a salon luxurious, young kids often have a different attitude about getting their hair cut. They squirm and squeal and refuse to sit still. Have you ever seen a stylist try to snip a moving target? It's not pretty—and the resulting 'do isn't either. Thankfully children's salons pull out all the stops to turn haircuts into a fun experience for families by plying their young clients with balloons, bubbles, cartoons, toys, funky chairs and lots of coddling.

A few years ago we posted about kids' haircutting places in Brooklyn. Today we're focusing on kid-friendly Manhattan salons. Here are seven (hopefully tear-free) spots where kids can get their hair cut in Manhattan.

Best High Tea in NYC: 10 Restaurants Serving Afternoon Tea for Kids and Families

Things to do with kids: Best High Tea in NYC: 10 Restaurants Serving Afternoon Tea for Kids and Families

[UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 17, 2012]
Having afternoon tea (popularly called high tea in NYC) can be a fun outing with kids whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a memorable experience. It's an especially great winter outing that puts you in the mood of old Victorian New York, which is particularly fitting during Christmastime.

There are several places that serve high tea in New York City, each with varying degrees of appropriateness for children of different ages. From the fancy Eloise Tea at the Plaza Hotel to the funky vegan tea served at Teany on the Lower East Side, there are teas great for children of all ages and parents of all budgets. We took kids to each of them and here's what we thought.

Have Yourself a Merry Victorian Christmas: Six Ways to Enjoy a 19th Century Holiday with NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Have Yourself a Merry Victorian Christmas: Six Ways to Enjoy a 19th Century Holiday with NYC Kids

[UPDATED: NOVEMBER 12, 2012]

I was born and bred across the pond, as you Americans say. I try to expose my child to bits of British culture year-round, but when the holidays roll around, I really find myself longing for good old-fashioned Victorian Christmas celebrations, like the ones I used to enjoy growing up.

The Victorian period covers the reign of England's Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901—and that’s where this history lesson ends. I'm more interested in sharing fun ways for families to enjoy vintage holiday fun that evokes this era. So don't be a Scrooge: From Christmas caroling to Charles Dickens to enjoying high tea, here are six ways to have yourself a merry Victorian Christmas in New York City.

Join Christmas Carolers for Holiday Songs and Cheer in NYC

Things to do with kids: Join Christmas Carolers for Holiday Songs and Cheer in NYC

[UPDATED: NOVEMBER 11, 2012]

You don't have to be Christian to love Christmas carols. Crooning these classic songs on a brisk evening amongst neighbors, pals or friendly strangers is a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season.

Carolers of all levels mingle at these events—wannabe Broadway stars and shyer singers blend together to serenade the city with a message of peace and joy. While caroling is often thought of as a rural or British tradition, there are actually many Christmas caroling events right here in New York City, and everyone is welcome to chime in.

Here are 12 gatherings where you can literally sing in the holidays. Also consider attending a Christmas tree lighting. Many illuminations end with impromptu caroling.

Free Outdoor Kids' Storytimes in New York City Parks

Things to do with kids: Free Outdoor Kids' Storytimes in New York City Parks

Summer in the city is all about free alfresco entertainment. There are complimentary concerts (for kids and grown-ups), no-cost movies and lots of free festivals.

But don't forget about free storytimes in city parks! Because you know your kids don't want to hear a tale told in a hot, crowded library. (And even if your local branch is swanky enough to have air conditioning, your children shouldn't be cooped up indoors.)

We've rounded up a dozen storytelling series for families to enjoy all summer long.

NYC Picnic Spots Near Free Outdoor Entertainment

Things to do with kids: NYC Picnic Spots Near Free Outdoor Entertainment

There are lots of lovely picnic spots in New York City. The city is home to many parks and unique outdoor spaces, many of which host cool spring and summer entertainment, the perfect complement to your alfresco meal.

Around this time of year, my family starts picnicking. My son adores it, and we don't have to worry about correcting his table manners or tell him to use his indoor voice.

Some days we enjoy a bona fide feast in a wicker basket; at other times, we just pack a lunchbox with sandwiches. I like to bring a fancy picnic blanket with a waterproof lining, but you can just sit on a park bench, picnic table or a patch of grass. In addition to the food, remember to pack napkins, utensils, dishes and cups (try to avoid disposable if you can. No reason to add to landfills!), and a plastic bag for garbage.

Read on for my family's list of favorite picnic places in Manhattan and Brooklyn, many nearby great outdoor performance series.
