St. Patrick's Day for NYC Kids: Parades, Celebrations and Irish Culture

Things to do with kids: St. Patrick's Day for NYC Kids: Parades, Celebrations and Irish Culture

Everyone feels at least a wee bit Irish around St. Patrick’s Day, especially here in NYC, where we have a large population of Irish folk. If your days of celebrating till you're green around the gills are a distant memory, don’t worry: There are plenty of truly kid-friendly ways to mark St. Patrick's Day throughout the month.

This year, St. Patrick's Day falls on Sunday, March 17 but the festivities begin this coming weekend with processions and parties that tend to be mellower and more family oriented than Manhattan's big parade. In addition to St. Patrick's Day parades in all five boroughs (Queens and Brooklyn actually have two each!), there are more subdued ways for families to celebrate, like step-dancing and bagpipe performances, Gaelic workshops, film festivals and a leprechaun hunt.

Here are our favorite ways to celebrate Irish culture and St. Patrick’s Day with kids in New York City. Sláinte!

See Free Animated Movies at the National Museum of the American Indian this Winter

Things to do with kids: See Free Animated Movies at the National Museum of the American Indian this Winter

The National Museum of the American Indian, which is located in the stunning Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, is a great destination on any day, literally. It's one of only a few NYC museums that are open every day throughout the year (save Christmas) and admission is always free.

But this winter, there's a new reason to visit: The institution's first-ever Animation Celebration! Looking North. Instead of bundling up and listening to traditional tales around a fire, families are invited to experience the vibrant stories and culture of Native Americans from Canada’s Arctic and Subarctic regions in the museum's toasty second floor screening room.

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Winter 2013: 12 Awesome Installations for Families

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Winter 2013: 12 Awesome Installations for Families

We love taking the kids to NYC's world-class museums at any time of year. But in the dead of winter, a trip to explore awesome and often interactive installations makes for a cool (yet warm) family outing.

We found a dozen fun exhibits that are worth checking out this season. From hands-on action at the Brooklyn Children's Museum's Big Adventure and Tony Hawk's Rad Science at the New York Hall of Science, to playable video games at the Museum of the Moving Image's Spacewar!, to an indoor tropical paradise at the New York Botanical Garden, to funky contemporary art at the Guggenheim's Gutai retrospective, here are the best museum exhibits for families this winter.

Restaurants Near Ground Zero: Where to Eat With Kids When Visiting the 9/11 Memorial in NYC

Things to do with kids: Restaurants Near Ground Zero: Where to Eat With Kids When Visiting the 9/11 Memorial in NYC

Ground Zero has become a must-see destination for many families visiting NYC. Making a visit to the 9/11 Memorial meaningful for children may be challenging, but finding a decent place to eat nearby is even more so. Besides all the construction still under way, the neighborhood lunch spots mainly cater to office workers from the Financial District so there are a lot of fast-food chains and delis with limited seating.

If you are heading up to Tribeca afterward, you'll find many family-friendly restaurants but in the immediate vicinity of the World Trade Center site, options are a more limited. Luckily, I know the area well and can give you the inside scoop on where to look for the best inexpensive kid-friendly restaurants and eats near Ground Zero.

Midnight Mass with NYC Kids: Family-Friendly Christmas Eve Services

Things to do with kids: Midnight Mass with NYC Kids: Family-Friendly Christmas Eve Services

Yesterday we shared festive ways to celebrate Christmas Eve with kids in New York City. But with tragic events like Hurricane Sandy and Sandy Hook Elementary School still fresh on our minds, many families may be looking for ways to remember those who were hurt or lost while praying for peace on earth and good will toward men.

While lots of NYC churches host kid-friendly religious services and pageants during the afternoon on December 24, you could also consider attending an authentic midnight mass with your family. In addition to the traditional Christmas Eve liturgy and caroling, these services will inevitably touch on recent events and hopefully provide tidings of comfort along with the joy of the season.

We've found five Manhattan churches that welcome visitors to midnight mass with kids in tow—yes, even babies and toddlers (we're sure; we checked!). You don't need to be a regular parishioner to attend and they're not as jam-packed as St. Patrick's Cathedral, although arriving early is still recommended. However you decide to spend Christmas Eve, we hope you find happiness and solace in the company of family and friends.

Our NYC Shopping Local Gift Guide is chock-full of great places to find cool kids' items, from seasonal pop-up shops to holiday markets to year-round family favorites. But in addition to hitting your usual go-to shops, why not try something new?

We've found seven new toy stores that opened in Manhattan and Brooklyn over the past year, many specializing in handcrafted, eco-friendly playthings that you won't find in the big chains. Bonus: Some of these shops also offer classes, sing-alongs and special events for kids, so you may find yourself hitting these spots long after the holidays are over.

Day of the Dead for NYC Kids 2012: Mexican Culture Comes Alive with Día de los Muertos Family Celebrations

Things to do with kids: Day of the Dead for NYC Kids 2012: Mexican Culture Comes Alive with Día de los Muertos Family Celebrations

Even though it's only the second week of October, you're probably busy figuring out which Halloween events and activities you'll have time to hit this month as October 31 draws near. But how about mixing something multicultural into your celebrating this year?

Day of the Dead—or Día de los Muertos as it's known in Spanish—is observed by many Latino cultures. While it's not a Halloween event per se, it occurs around the same time and features many of the same trappings (skulls, colorful outfits, parades, etc.). During the Day of the Dead, revelers celebrate friends and family members who have passed on by building altars and adorning them with colorful paper flowers, grinning skeletons and candles. It's a really joyful way to honor the deceased without freaking kids out.

Day of the Dead technically takes place on November 1 and 2 to coincide with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, however this year the events seem to be spread out throughout October and November. Here are five ways to celebrate Day of the Dead with kids in New York City, most of which are totally FREE.
