Foreign Language Camps for NYC Kids: Learn to Speak Spanish, French, Chinese and More

Things to do with kids: Foreign Language Camps for NYC Kids: Learn to Speak Spanish, French, Chinese and More

In our melting pot of a city, kids are exposed to lots of different languages, and the summer is a great time for children to try to pick up a new one. Whether your child yearns to master Chinese, French, German, Italian or Spanish, New York City is home to lots of language immersion summer camps. No textbooks at these programs. Instead, kids experience the usual seasonal fun—swimming, sports, arts—in their non-native tongue. The instructors and counselors are all fluent and not only teach kids the language, they expose them to the culture, too. Here are 10 language immersion summer day camps that will have your kids saying hola, bonjour or ciao in no time.

Dyker Heights at Christmas: Taking Kids to the Mind-Blowing Dyker Lights Displays in Brooklyn

Dyker Heights at Christmas: Taking Kids to the Mind-Blowing Dyker Lights Displays in Brooklyn

For years I'd been hearing about the awesome Christmas displays in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. I'd seen the Flickr feeds and the YouTube videos but I didn't make the trek out there until 2011. Once I saw those jaw-dropping sights in person, I knew visiting "Dyker Lights" would become an annual family holiday tradition.

But living in upper Manhattan, Dyker Heights is a serious schlep. It's really not doable via public transportation, especially at night with kids in tow. It's better to drive there. Last year, I hitched a ride with a neighbor but this year I decided to play tourist and went on A Slice of Brooklyn's Christmas Lights & Cannoli guided bus tour. Even though my daughter and I saw many of the same houses both times, our visits were quite different. If you're considering taking the kids to Dyker Heights this holiday season but are wondering which is the best way to go, here's how the two experiences compare.

Dyker Heights Family-Friendly Restaurants: Where to Eat Near Dyker Lights with Kids

Things to do with kids: Dyker Heights Family-Friendly Restaurants: Where to Eat Near Dyker Lights with Kids

We continue our month-long focus on Dyker Heights with a roundup of family-friendly restaurants in the area. Since the neighborhood has a suburban feel, it's no surprise that all of the businesses, including eateries, are pretty spread out. If you're up for strolling (or driving), you'll find a lot of places to eat near the intersection of 65th Street and the Gowanus Expressway, which is right on the border of two more commercial neighborhoods: Bay Ridge and Sunset Park. However, if you're going to gawk at the area's world-famous Dyker Lights displays, which are located from 11th to 13th Avenues between 83rd and 86th Streets, they're quite a walk away.

So our Dyker Heights restaurant post is divided into two categories: Places to eat near Dyker Lights, and places further afield but still in the lovely, mansion-filled neighborhood.

Dyker Heights with Kids: 20 Things to Do for NYC Families

Things to do with kids: Dyker Heights with Kids: 20 Things to Do for NYC Families

There's a reason Dyker Heights, Brooklyn feels like a swanky suburb. When it was originally developed in the late 19th century, it was marketed as exactly that, a community of stately mansions within commuting distance of the hustle and bustle of the city. Sandwiched in between the more commercial areas of Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst, the neighborhood is primarily residential and is well known for its extravagant Christmas displays, which attract a slew of locals and tourists every holiday season. But whether you visit in December or at another time of year, Dyker Heights is a lovely area to stroll through with its large single-family homes and manicured lawns. It's hard to believe you're in NYC.

While you won't find a ton of family attractions in the area, there are a few cool spots for kids, including Dyker Beach Park, CityParks Junior Golf Center, a BounceU and a bunch of delicious restaurants, bakeries and markets. Since Dyker Heights is overwhelmingly Italian, it's a great place to pick up pizza, pasta and fancy pastries. One downside: It's quite a walk from the nearest subway stops (the N or the D, depending on where you're going).

Throughout November, we'll be covering all the things there are to do, see and eat in the nabe. For the purposes of our posts, our boundaries are Interstate 278 to 14th Avenue, 65th Street to Shore Parkway. Here are our top 20 things to do on a visit to Dyker Heights.

Math Camps and Summer Math Classes in New York CIty

Things to do with kids: Math Camps and Summer Math Classes in New York CIty

[UPDATED: February 23, 2013]  While there's always a big push for summer reading, kids' math skills don't get much of a workout while school's on break. Come September, many students find they've forgotten a lot of what they had learned and start out the academic year behind.

In order to make sure your kids' math knowledge doesn't melt away in the summer sun, our education blogger, Blythe, has rounded up New York City camps and classes where students can put two and two together—and hopefully do a lot more complicated equations. Our picks include competitive math programs, individualized instruction and remedial classes.

Bounce Houses in NYC: BounceU and Other Indoor Places for Kids to Jump Around

Things to do with kids: Bounce Houses in NYC: BounceU and Other Indoor Places for Kids to Jump Around

[UPDATED: JANUARY 14, 2013]

As the parent of a hop-happy toddler, I can tell you that nothing excites my son like a big old bounce house. These inflatable favorites are a staple of outdoor festivals and street fairs but it's such a bummer waiting on a long line to then shell out $2 or more for a two-minute session. Luckily NYC is home to several bounce house play spaces. These spots offer all kinds of inflatable fun such as long bouncy slides, tunnels and obstacle courses. And best of all, they host open bounce sessions, letting your kids jump all they want for one low price.

Foreign Language Playgroups for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Foreign Language Playgroups for NYC Kids

[UPDATED: August 17, 2012]

Whether you want to preserve your heritage, develop your child's brain, or prepare them for the eventual Chinese world dominance, there are many foreign language playgroups in New York City, ready to help you out. Studies show that even brief, regular exposure to a foreign language at a young age can help your child's ability to pick up languages later in life as well as developing their ability to think abstractly and to focus.

Here are some foreign language playgroups to try out:
