NYC Beaches After Sandy: What to Expect at Rockaway, Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Others in 2013

Things to do with kids: NYC Beaches After Sandy: What to Expect at Rockaway, Coney Island, Brighton Beach and Others in 2013

New York City beaches open for the season this Memorial Day weekend despite the damage they sustained during Hurricane Sandy. The Parks Department staff, and sanitation and construction crews have been working nonstop to make sure they are safe and clean, and that the sand is back where it belongs. (In some communities, sand washed up onto residents' front lawns!) This is good news for NYC families because—much as we enjoy hitting the Jersey Shore, Long Island beaches and Fire Island—we're not big fans of renting cars or sitting in traffic.

While it won't quite be business as usual for New York City's beaches this summer, you'll still be able to hop on a subway, bus or ferry to hit the shores. From the "Bronx Rivera" to the iconic Coney Island to the Rockaways, these eight urban seasides offer everything that suburban beaches do except the out-of-town commute.

Coney Island After Sandy: Help Save the Mermaid Parade and Find Out What's Open for Summer 2013

Things to do with kids: Coney Island After Sandy: Help Save the Mermaid Parade and Find Out What's Open for Summer 2013

Even though Hurricane Sandy may seem so long ago, many communities are still recovering from all the damage done. One of the hardest hit areas in NYC is one of our favorite places to play in the summer: Coney Island in Brooklyn.

While the Parks Department says the beach will be ready to welcome swimmers and sunbathers come Memorial Day weekend, many other Coney Island attractions like the New York Aquarium are struggling to open for the season, and some iconic events like the annual Mermaid Parade may not happen at all without support from fans. We've got up-to-date info on what to expect when you visit Coney Island this summer, and how you can help the People's Playground bounce back.

It's Circus Season: Enjoy Circus Oz, Big Apple Circus, Circo Comedia and Other Circus Fun Over the Holidays

It's Circus Season: Enjoy Circus Oz, Big Apple Circus, Circo Comedia and Other Circus Fun Over the Holidays

Usually we write our yearly circus post in the spring when Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus barrel into town for their annual extravaganza. But this holiday season, there are not one, not two, not three, not four, but five circus shows playing New York City over the holidays, plus a circus-themed exhibit and Cirque du Soleil holiday windows inspired by the troupe's soon-to-open 3D movie.

So if you want to run away with the circus you certainly don't need to go far. Here's where to get your big-top fix in NYC this December plus details on two big circus spectacles debuting in 2013.

Celebrate Halloween at the Last Weekend of Ascarium at the New York Aquarium

Celebrate Halloween at the Last Weekend of Ascarium at the New York Aquarium

When we think Coney Island, we generally picture it in summer. Beaches, hot dogs, roller coasters—it already seems so far off. But fall is actually a wonderful time to visit New York City's most famous beach community, while it’s still pleasant out and the crowds are thinning. The Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium gives us another great reason to go since it transforms into the Ascarium every October in honor of Halloween. This year's edition has a pirate theme, and there are cool activities and Halloween decorations at every turn. Plus plenty of kids dress up in their Halloween best, which adds to the festive atmosphere. Ascarium at the New York Aquarium is a good deal, too: For every full-price general admission adult ticket purchased, one child under age 12 in costume gets in free. But you've got to hurry: This is the very last weekend of Ascarium this season. Missing it would truly be frightening.

Bronx Zoo's Boo at the Zoo - Halloween Fun for Kids and Families 2012

Things to do with kids: Bronx Zoo's Boo at the Zoo - Halloween Fun for Kids and Families 2012

One of my family’s favorite Halloween traditions is to take our little animal-costumed boy (in the past he's been a penguin, cow, bat, bumblebee and flying squirrel) to the Bronx Zoo for its annual Boo at the Zoo celebration. The zoo really goes all out for the occasion and transforms into a festive and not-too-scary Halloween destination for families.

The special Boo at the Zoo activities take place every weekend through October 28, so you've got plenty of time to check them out. Attractions include extraordinary 3D pumpkin carving demos, live music and magic, a spooky hayride, a haunted mansion, cool Halloween-themed animal programs, costume parades and even trick-or-treating. Boo at the Zoo is a great deal, too: For every full-price general admission adult ticket purchased, one child in costume gets in free. Read on for details about Boo at the Zoo and check out our Halloween Fun Guide for even more seasonal fun.

Table Tennis in NYC: Where to Play Ping-Pong with Kids

Things to do with kids: Table Tennis in NYC: Where to Play Ping-Pong with Kids

When kids say they want to play something with their parents, they usually mean they want to beat them at something. But when it comes to sports, there are few activities where a parent can honestly be bested by a person half their size and strength without resorting to throwing the game.

The exception: table tennis, better known as Ping-Pong. Forget size and strength; Ping-Pong is all about focus, aim and perseverance—qualities your kids have probably mastered in front of the Wii or Xbox. Here are our favorite kid-friendly New York City Ping-Pong spots where your little ones can whip you fair and square using a tiny paddle and ball.

A-Maze-Ing Water at the New York Aquarium: Water Conservation Made Fun for NYC Kids

A-Maze-Ing Water at the New York Aquarium: Water Conservation Made Fun for NYC Kids

While recycling gets lots of attention, water conservation isn't focused on as frequently although keeping water clean and protecting marine environments is of paramount importance. The New York Aquarium’s new exhibit, A-Maze-Ing Water, aims to change that by inviting kids to learn fascinating facts about the water cycle and why water conservation is such a serious matter.

The 1,500-square-foot exhibition presents the water cycle as an interactive maze that has children speeding on a kid-size zip line and spinning a roulette wheel to navigate the twists and turns on their path, all while soaking up an important environmental message.

Free and Cheap Magic Shows for NYC Kids

Things to do with kids: Free and Cheap Magic Shows for NYC Kids

When you look at the prices of a lot of magic shows in New York City, like Steve Cohen's Chamber Magic or Sam Eaton's The Quantum Eye, you realize that the real trick is affording tickets. But there are some (comparatively) affordable magic shows for kids in NYC, in fact a few are even free.

Whether your child believes in sorcery or just wants to figure out how it's done, a good magic show can captivate even really young kids. Trust me I know: Ever since my preschooler saw a DVD of that old Frosty TV special in which a magician's hat brings the snowman to life, she's been obsessed and we've seen at least a dozen magic shows, from the free ones at Bryant Park's Le Carrousel to the long-running Off Broadway show Amazing Max. So ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, behold our roundup of magic shows for kids in New York City this summer.
