12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Things to do with kids: 12 Spring Festivals, Fairs and Carnivals for NYC Families April 2013

Along with the mild weather comes a fresh crop of outdoor festivals, street fairs and carnivals, big annual favorites like two of our April Go List picks, the Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Cherry Blossom Festival, as well as smaller community happenings.

These spring fests are a great way to entertain your family for just a few bucks—sometimes even for FREE. And the activities are really diverse: Introduce the kids to old-fashioned games, celebrate planet Earth, chow down on homemade treats or watch live performances by kiddie bands, puppet troupes and more. Plus, these events aren't just fun, they foster community by bringing folks together to support a school, playground, cultural institution or common cause.

Festival season doesn't kick off until this weekend but you can start planning right now. Here are 12 awesome events to put in your April calendar.

We came up with six resolutions for families and then found activities to fulfill each one—all at places that are open on January 1, 2013 in NYC.

What's Open on Christmas Day in NYC 2012: 12 Things to Do with Kids After Opening Gifts

Things to do with kids: What's Open on Christmas Day in NYC 2012: 12 Things to Do with Kids After Opening Gifts

The gifts have been ripped open, the insane plastic packaging dismantled and the batteries installed. Dinner won't be ready for hours and the kids are totally stir crazy. What else can you do on Christmas Day?

Jews have been asking that question for centuries and their answer in New York City is often Chinese food and a movie. But there are other options, whether or not you celebrate Christmas. Here are a dozen fun things to do on December 25.

You can find even more seasonal activities in our Holiday Fun Guide.

Holiday Shows for NYC Kids: Seasonal Theater and Concerts for $20 or Less

Things to do with kids: Holiday Shows for NYC Kids: Seasonal Theater and Concerts for $20 or Less

'Tis the season to get the gang all dressed up to see some holiday shows. Luckily in New York City, you don't have to blow all of your gift money on tickets. There are lots of small, low-key stage productions that are great for kids (even young, fidgety ones) that will get the whole family into the holiday spirit. All of our picks are $20 or under per person—a few are even less than $10!

These shows aren't all about Christmas, either. Hanukkah, Kwanza and the snowy winter season are also represented. From A Charlie Brown Christmas live onstage to a puppet take on Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus to Flying Latkes to abridged tot-friendly mountings of The Nutcracker, here are a dozen holiday shows (and a couple concerts) for NYC families. Remember, you can find lots of other seasonal fun in our NYC Holiday Guide.

Yes, everyone knows about Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. But what happens once it's over? Your dinner doesn't start for another few hours, and if you're not the one cooking, you're going to find yourself with free time on your hands.

Luckily, New York City never sleeps. There actually are things to do on Thanksgiving Day in New York City that don't involve eating turkey, watching giant balloons or camping out for Black Friday sales. Here are ten fun ways to spend part of your holiday with the family.

Happy Thanksgiving to your family from all of the moms at Mommy Poppins NYC!

NYC Christmas Tree and Menorah Lightings Better Than Rockefeller Center 2012

Things to do with kids: NYC Christmas Tree and Menorah Lightings Better Than Rockefeller Center 2012

You don't have to brave Rockefeller Center to witness a fabulous Christmas tree lighting.

We've rounded up tree lightings (and menorah, snowflake and even a few building illuminations) that are much less crowded, way cooler (one even comes with a performance of The Nutcracker) and feel like community celebrations, not events for tourists. Plus, most of these festive events are free and you don't have to stand on top of a car to see all of the great things going on.

Read on for a host of awesome holiday illuminations in New York City. You can find more seasonal fun in our Holiday Guide.

NYC Playgrounds with Shade: Shady Park Benches and Equipment

Things to do with kids: NYC Playgrounds with Shade: Shady Park Benches and Equipment

Every summer we get emails from readers asking us which NYC playgrounds have the most shade. While kids can always cool off in the sprinklers, we parents are stuck baking in the sun all day—this week I've been reduced to lugging a parasol to the playground and it really doesn't go with my sneakers.

Although we know of a couple playgrounds that offer exceptional amounts of shade—Hippo Playground in Riverside Park comes to mind—we decided to ask our readers if they knew of any super-shady playgrounds in New York City. After clarifying that we were talking about shelter from the sun's rays, not sketchy parks, they came through with a number of great suggestions.

Free Outdoor Movies for Kids in NYC this Summer

Things to do with kids: Free Outdoor Movies for Kids in NYC this Summer

Enjoying a free alfresco film is a rite of summer in New York City. While most series aren't specifically aimed at children, most outdoor film festivals, including biggies like Bryant Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park's Syfy Movies With A View, include a family-friendly screening or two.

Movies begin at dusk between 8-8:30pm but make sure you arrive early: The well known series fill up fast. Plus, some of them offer cool, pre-movie entertainment.

So pack a picnic, bring your blanket, sit back, relax and enjoy the show at one of these outdoor summer movie series in NYC.
