Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

Best Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Spring 2013: 7 Great New Installations

While spring brings outdoor festivals and fairs, and long days at NYC's playgrounds, it's also a great season for new museum exhibits. Alfresco sculpture installations at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the New York Botanical Garden, hands-on math and science fun at the New York Hall of Science, children's artwork at the Guggenheim, the Cloister's 75th anniversary and old-school music videos at the Museum of the Moving Image are just some of what's on tap this spring. Here are the top seven museum exhibits for families making their debuts this spring in New York City.

NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

Things to do with kids: NYC Pool Party for Kids: Indoor Swimming Pools for Children's Birthday Parties

In the past, we've written about ways to host a summer urban pool party and shared our favorite outdoor NYC public pools. But this winter, a few of our readers wrote in asking where they could book an indoor pool party off-season. Swimming parties are certainly a decadent way to celebrate a birthday. The kids rip off their coats, jump in their bathing suits, hit in the water and get an instant taste of summer fun, regardless of what season it actually is.

Luckily, there are a bunch of indoor pools in NYC, and while most of them are only open to members or currently enrolled students, many offer party packages to the general public. These indoor swimming parties are also a great option in the summer since the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation pools don't offer birthday packages and have a long list of strictly enforced rules.

Queens Party Places: 10 More Great Kids' Birthday Party Ideas

Things to do with kids: Queens Party Places: 10 More Great Kids' Birthday Party Ideas

Back in 2010, we posted our first roundup of cool Queens party places, including favorites like Astoria Sports Complex and the Queens Zoo. But there are so many other awesome birthday spots in the borough—including a few that recently opened like Astoria's Kids Playhouse and Oliloli Studio in Forest Hills—that we decided to do a second post with 10 more options.

These Queens birthday party places cater to all kinds of kids, from active to artsy to animal lovers. And as a Queens mom with two children myself, I've been to many of these spots personally. You can find additional birthday inspiration in our Party Guide.

30 Easter Egg Hunts for Kids in New York City 2013

Things to do with kids: 30 Easter Egg Hunts for Kids in New York City 2013

Easter is coming up on Sunday, March 31, 2013 and what's the holiday without an outdoor egg hunt? You don't need a backyard to have one. There are plenty of egg hunts all over NYC, where kids can run through the soft spring grass searching for brightly colored orbs hidden amongst bushes and blooms.

We've got the scoop on the best Easter egg hunts in NYC. Most are outdoors in parks, zoos, gardens and farms, but a few are indoors at museums and other tot spots. Plus a lot of these fetes come with extra seasonal fun, like face painting, family concerts and spring crafts. Arrive early! The eggs never stick around for long.

If you'd rather do it yourself, you can always bring your own Easter eggs and set up a little private hunt in a quiet corner of your local playground. If you opt for an egg hunt in your home, we recommend using plastic or blown eggs. You don't want to stumble across any stinky hard-boiled surprises come summer!

Here are our top Easter egg hunts in New York City.

Play Pac-Man and Other Retro Video Games at NYC Museums and Family Arcades

Things to do with kids: Play Pac-Man and Other Retro Video Games at NYC Museums and Family Arcades

Your kids are intimately familiar with all of the different Angry Birds and their powers, and know exactly where to Cut the Rope to feed the little monster. But can they name all four of the ghosts in Pac-Man? Doubtful... but we bet you can! (Say it with me: Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde). Since today's kids are used to touch screen games (or games that require no touching at all), getting the chance to jerk around joystick on a vintage video game console is a real novelty. Trouble is, where do you find those these days? Why, in a museum of course.

The Museum of the Moving Image and the Museum of Modern Art have both amassed old-school arcade video game collections, and you can actually play many of them in two new exhibits. And if you worry that a museum isn't the optimal setting for game playing (which often involves a lot of whooping and cheering), we've also found a handful of old-fashioned family-friendly arcades (and no, not one is a Chuck E. Cheese's or Dave & Buster's).

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Winter 2013: 12 Awesome Installations for Families

Best New Museum Exhibits for NYC Kids Winter 2013: 12 Awesome Installations for Families

We love taking the kids to NYC's world-class museums at any time of year. But in the dead of winter, a trip to explore awesome and often interactive installations makes for a cool (yet warm) family outing.

We found a dozen fun exhibits that are worth checking out this season. From hands-on action at the Brooklyn Children's Museum's Big Adventure and Tony Hawk's Rad Science at the New York Hall of Science, to playable video games at the Museum of the Moving Image's Spacewar!, to an indoor tropical paradise at the New York Botanical Garden, to funky contemporary art at the Guggenheim's Gutai retrospective, here are the best museum exhibits for families this winter.

Karaoke for NYC Kids: Family-friendly Singing Spots

Things to do with kids: Karaoke for NYC Kids: Family-friendly Singing Spots

Ah, karaoke, a favorite activity for rowdy office parties and over-21 birthdays. The last time I went to a karaoke place, my coat ended up on the floor, soaking in a puddle of beer. It was a fun night out... but one I couldn't share with my children.

But karaoke-loving kids don't need to confine their singing to the shower. They can enjoy an authentic experience, minus the R-rated lyrics and copious amounts of alcohol, at a number of New York City karaoke spots that have family-friendly hours during the daytime. Many of these places even offer children's party packages where the bottomless pitchers of beer are replaced with juice or soda.

Destination Family Restaurants in Queens: 10 Kid-Friendly Eateries Worth the Trip

Things to do with kids: Destination Family Restaurants in Queens: 10 Kid-Friendly Eateries Worth the Trip

As a proud Queens native, I'm always looking for new ways to encourage others (including my own family) to explore my home borough. And since it's famous for being culturally diverse, a do-it-yourself food tour is a great way to get a taste of all the different neighborhoods.

Queens boasts some of the best kid-friendly restaurants in New York City—and I'm not just saying that because I was raised here. You can introduce your children to a wide variety of authentic cuisine at reasonable prices, and the portions are so big you always end up with leftovers to take home. Plus there are off-the-beaten path gems that have incredible kid appeal, like coffee house Waltz-Astoria and its family concerts and old New York soda fountains Eddie's Sweet Shop and Jahn's.

I thought about all of the places I've eaten in Queens over the years and came up with my personal list of the top ten restaurants, bakeries and ice cream parlors that are all worth schlepping the kids to, even if you live in another borough. See if your favorites made the cut and feel free to share your additions in the comments as I know there are many, many more.
