Things to do with kids: Winter Break Camps for NYC Kids: Sports Programs for Presidents' Day Break 2013

Earlier this week we posted about six awesome NYC day trips perfect for a quick February break getaway. However, we realize that even though public school students are looking at a four-day Presidents' Day weekend, many parents will need to work one (or more) of those days and need to find school holiday activities.

Since winter is a season when kids start bouncing off the walls from spending way too much time trapped indoors, we figured it was a great opportunity to highlight some of the city's best athletic camps for children. So instead of doing our usual massive roundup of winter break programs, we picked out seven sporty spots, all offering drop-off camps on Monday, February 18 and Tuesday, February 19. One even offers coverage the entire week for those few kids (like my son in parochial school) who still get the entire winter break off. Best of all, most of these camps let you register for just a day at a time, so if Tuesday's the only day you need, that's all you pay for.

Asphalt Green February Fun Camp – Upper East Side
555 East 90th Street between York and East End Avenues
Monday, February 18-Tuesday, February 19 8:45am-3:15pm
$115 per day
Ages 4-12
The uptown athletic center groups kids by age (4-5, 6-7 and 8-12) and lets them play all kinds of sports, including soccer, baseball, basketball, gymnastics and swimming in an Olympic-size pool. There's also a full week option for children ages 4-5 for $500.

Super Soccer Stars – Manhattan and Brooklyn
Whether your young Pele is just starting out or wants to bend it like Beckham, soccer camp is a great way to keep the kids entertained while burning off all their energy. This popular program offers a number of different options at various locations, including the Upper East and West Sides, Brooklyn and Tribeca.

Mini Camp
Monday February 18-Tuesday, February 19, times vary.
Varies by location: $140-$160
Ages 2 1/2-5
Young athletes learn basic soccer techniques and also enjoy arts and crafts, and free play.

Kick It Clinics
Monday February 18-Tuesday, February 19 11:30am-3:30pm
Jewish Center, 131 West 86th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues
$180
Ages 6-12
Older kids can develop their soccer skills and play friendly games.

Aviator Sports & Events Center Holiday Break Camps – Marine Park
Floyd Bennett Field, 3159 Flatbush Avenue
Monday, February 18-Tuesday, February 19 9am-4pm, extended hours available for an additional fee
$88 per day, $170 for two-day session
Ages 3-15
Kids can have all kinds of athletic fun at this massive Brooklyn facility. Ice-skating, soccer, basketball and gymnastics are just some of what's on tap.

Presidents' Week Junior Tennis Program – Prospect Park South
Prospect Park Tennis Center, 50 Parkside Avenue near St. Pauls Place
Monday, February 18-Tuesday, February 19 1-4pm and Wednesday, February 20-Friday, February 22 4-7pm
$80 per day, $350 for the week
Ages 5-18
The Brooklyn tennis program offers half days of drills and match play on indoor courts. Even if the kids have school Wednesday through Friday, they can still take advantage of the full week since camp starts after school at 4pm on those days.

Simply Sports – Upper East Side
The Wagner School, 220 East 76th Street between Second and Third Avenues
Monday February 18-Tuesday, February 19 9am-3pm; half-day option also available
$110 per day, $70 half-day morning, $60 half-day afternoon
Ages 5-12
Kids can run themselves ragged playing a variety of team sports including basketball, soccer, flag football, hockey, dodgeball and capture the flag.

Kids of Summer Sports – Upper West Side
P.S. 145, 150 West 105th Street between Amsterdam and Columbus Avenues
Monday, February 18-Tuesday, February 19 9am-3pm
$74 per day, $140 for two-day session
Ages 6-13
Participants play dodgeball, soccer, baseball, wiffle ball and more in the school's spacious gym.

Chelsea Piers Holiday Sports Camps – Chelsea
23rd Street and the Hudson River
The massive athletics complex offers five different programs over midwinter break.

Junior Golf Camp

Little Athletes
Monday, February 18-Friday, February 22 9am-noon, extended hours available for an additional fee
$75 per day with a two-day minimum; $360 for the week
Ages 3-5
Toilet-trained preschoolers can opt for this half-day program, where they get to try a variety of activities including rock climbing, art, soccer and dance.

Urban Adventurers
Monday, February 18-Friday, February 22 9am-3:30pm, extended hours available for an additional fee
$135 per day; $590 for the week
Ages 13-15
Teens can do team-building exercises designed to develop self-confidence, collaboration and communication skills. Other activities on tap include rock climbing, basketball, soccer, volleyball, ice-skating, yoga, dance and indoor cycling.

Don't have a sporty kid? Not to worry: Last year's February break camps post has lots of other options. Just keep in mind that prices and other info may have changed since 2012, and that some programs may not be happening due to the shortened February break. Best thing to do is call the camp you're interested in directly to get up-to-date info.
