Weekend Fun for NYC Kids: Free Festivals, New Discovery Garden, Pokémon Concert June 6-7

6/3/15 - By Stephanie Ogozalek

A bunch of our top family event picks for June are happening this weekend, and we're trying to figure out how many we can hit since we can't seem to choose. There's Governors Island's Figment Arts Festival, the Egg Rolls & Egg Creams Festival on the Lower East Side, the debut of Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Discovery Garden and Celebrate Brooklyn!'s annual Ezra Jack Keats Family Concert. The best part? They're all FREE.

But wait—there's more! Like a Pokémon concert, Long Island City's annual Bike Parade and the New York Aquarium's World Oceans Celebration.

These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our best bets are below. As always, you can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

All Weekend

Figment NYC – Governors Island
From our June GoList: Let your creativity run wild at this two-day festival where visitors of all ages can participate in or collaborate on a wide variety of projects. In years past, activities have included splashing around in big buckets of colored water, painting giant murals and frolicking in a tent filled with rose petals. The members of the Figment arts collective will also debut their brand-new mini-golf course and Interactive Sculpture Garden for the season. FREE

New York Theatre Ballet: Carnival of the Animals – Midtown East
Catch a spirited ballet set to Camille Saint-Saëns' playful classical piece. NYTB's family-friendly performances are the perfect introduction to ballet: they last just one hour and include an interactive dance workshop in which kids learn a few basic steps.

World Oceans Day Celebration – Coney Island
Celebrate our planet's amazing oceans at the New York Aquarium. Enjoy eco-crafts, watch volunteer divers explore the coral reef exhibit and meet mer-folk Molly and Gil, the stars of Nickelodeon's animated series Bubble Guppies. Free with admission

Saturday, June 6

Pokémon: Symphonic Evolutions – Midtown West
From our June GoList: The pop-culture phenomenon known as Pokémon comes to life in a unique multimedia production at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. The music from the video games will be played by a full orchestra, while action sequences are projected behind the musicians.

Ezra Jack Keats Family Concert: Creole for Kidz! Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience – Prospect Park
More June GoList fun: Enjoy the sounds of the bayou in Brooklyn with a set created specifically for children. Bonus: Kindie rock pioneer Dan Zanes will read a few books by beloved children's author Ezra Jack Keats. FREE

Frolic Discovery Garden Grand Opening Fest – Crown Heights
And another June GoList pick: The Brooklyn Botanic Garden celebrates the opening day of its new Discovery Garden with a nature and art-filled family fest. Guided nature walks, an alfresco dance party with stilt walkers, and live Dixieland jazz and ragtime tunes are also on tap. FREE

Staten Island Children's Museum's Carnival & Science Spectacular – Staten Island
Watch a "Fire & Ice" show from Mad Science, learn about the science behind the circus with clowns from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and enjoy bouncy houses, live music and other traditional carnival fun.

Stories at the Statue – Upper East Side
Enjoy the season opener of this annual storytelling series at the Hans Christian Andersen Statue in Central Park. Today, Laura Simms and Anne Shimojima perform Tayzan, The Red Fish and The Crane Wife respectively. FREE

Little Red Lighthouse Open House – Washington Heights
Don't worry: Even little kids can make it to the top of this NYC landmark. (My son did it at age three!) Before you go, read the classic children’s book that made it famous: The Little Red Light House and the Great Gray Bridge. Arrive early! The Parks Department only opens this lighthouse to the public a few times a year so it's often mobbed. FREE

Long Island City Bike Parade – Long Island City
Families can pimp their rides at Socrates Sculpture Park’s pre-parade workshop and then show them off in a colorful bike procession, which ends with a festival in Queensbridge Park. FREE

Bronx River Festival – the Bronx
Come to River Park for food, live music and lots of outdoor fun, including canoeing and field day games. This year's theme is Hello Herring in honor of the park's new fish ladder. FREE

Egg Rolls & Egg Creams Festival—and Introducing Empanadas – Lower East Side
Our final June GoList pick of the weekend: Celebrate the multicultural heritage of the Lower East Side at this tasty street fair hosted by the Museum at Eldridge Street. This year, Puerto Rican eats and activities join the mix of Chinese and Jewish culture. The egg rolls and empanadas are kosher, and the egg creams are made with NYC's classic Fox's U-bet chocolate & flavored syrups. FREE

Kite Flying Festival – Williamsburg
Enjoy a day of kite flying fun to support the kids at Brooklyn's PS 132. Also on tap: live performances by NYC's own Hungry March Band as well as the school's talented students. Free admission but there are fees for activities

Freshkills Park Discovery Days – Staten Island
The 2,200-acre landfill is shaping up to be one of NYC’s best green spaces. While it's not finished, you can get a preview of what's to come at this event. Walk, hike or grab one of the free loaner bikes to explore the park's trails. FREE
