At the New Victory Theater's, Hunchback , author Victor Hugo narrates the tale, leading children through the performance, giving the story some significant historical context and explaining the importance of references to the Notre Dame Cathedral. The play/puppet show is pretty cerebral, and can be a little scary, but my 8 year old companion loved the goofy Victor Hugo and I loved the artistry of the puppets, mask and staging of the show.

If you get there early you can take a look at the little gallery downstairs which has a summary of the story, some historical facts and more information about the Redmoon Theater Company. Or you might want to pick up a copy of an illustrated classic, graphic novel or even a children's book version of the story before you go, but I don't recommend the Disney film version, which bastardizes the story so much that it would only be confusing.

Hunchback is recommended for ages 8 to adult and plays only through November 9, 2008. Tickets start at $12.50 for non-members. The New Victory Theater is consistently one of the best cultural venues for kids in New York City, so considering membership would be worthwhile. After the 2pm performance this Saturday, there will be a talk-back session with the actors after the performance.

Tickets can be purchased through the New Victory Theater website.
