Follow the tours just use the pictures and do it scavenger hunt style.

The Monster Project
Artist Kylin O'Brien is taking children's monster drawings and painting them in giant form around the city (See one pictured above). The first three are in DUMBO, where you can seek them out on your way to other fun kid stuff in that 'hood. (Thanks to reader, Kate for this tip.)

American Museum of Natural History
Learn about the real monsters of NYC when it was underwater (the last time) at the IMAX Film Sea Monsters: a Prehistoric Adventure at AMNH.

More Museums
Another fun way to get through the Metropolitan Museum of Art is to turn your visit into a monster hunt. Head toward the Medieval European art or the Asian Wing for the best chances. The Cloisters is also packed with beasts and often has family programs to learn more about them.

Make Your Own Monster
You may have heard of the deluxe Make your own monster service at FAO that will turn your child's drawing into a stuffed animal for a mere $250. Now there's a more economical way. For just $25 kids can pick from a number of different body shapes and colors then customize the features to create their unique beast at CurlyQCuties.com
