Winter Break Day Trips for NYC Families: 6 Great Presidents' Day Break Getaways

Things to do with kids: Winter Break Day Trips for NYC Families: 6 Great Presidents' Day Break Getaways

Normally around now we would be sharing lots of things to do in New York City during February break. But due to school days missed during Hurricane Sandy, the usual week-long midwinter recess is now just four days, so there's not as much going on as in years past.

While we will certainly be updating our NYC Presidents' Day weekend events post next week, we think those four days will be the perfect time to take a day trip. So we've rounded up six really cool, kid-friendly destinations that are all less than two hours away from NYC. No need to book a hotel! Whether you opt to jump around, get all wet or commune with nature, here are six great getaways for New York City families during February break.

Cross-Country Skiing Near NYC: Where to Nordic Ski with Kids

Things to do with kids: Cross-Country Skiing Near NYC: Where to Nordic Ski with Kids

While we've written plenty of posts about downhill skiing with NYC kids, we've never covered cross-country skiing. Also known as Nordic skiing, cross-country skiing is a great winter sport for families. Children as young as five can ski alone, and parents can tow tots in a sled or carry them in a backpack while on the trails. You can't do that while swooshing down a mountain!

Cross-country skiing is a fun way for active kids to burn off energy in the colder months and spend time outside. While you use most of the same equipment that you'd need for a day on the slopes—skis, boots, bindings, poles, goggles, helmets and warm clothing—cross-country skiing is nowhere near as dangerous or as expensive as downhill skiing. You won't be at risk for slamming into a tree at full speed, and trail passes usually cost about $20 per person.

After a good snowfall in New York City, you can cross-country ski just about anywhere. I've seen people doing it in parks and even right down the middle of Fifth Avenue before the snow plows cleared the street. But if you're looking to go cross-country skiing in a more scenic (and less bumpy) environment, there are tri-state area destinations that offer many miles of well-groomed trails, as well as amenities like warm lodges where you can sit back, relax, sip on hot cocoa and enjoy a family meal.

Unlike traditional ski resorts, most cross-country trails aren't in the business of making their own snow. So you're going to have to wait for the white stuff before you can get out there. Once that happens, here are six spots where families can enjoy cross-country skiing, most less than a two-hour drive from New York City.

Best New York City Views: 10 Spots to See and Photograph NYC

Things to do with kids: Best New York City Views: 10 Spots to See and Photograph NYC

Visitors come to New York City from the world over to eat our pizza, feel our energy and marvel at our spectacular views. But even for us locals, NYC is an awe-inspiring sight (we just need to remember to slow down and take it in every once in a while).

While tourists routinely flock to the Empire State Building or the Top of the Rock to literally look down on the city, there are less well known vantage points that also offer incredible views of NYC, including parks, promenades, museums and a tram. So grab your camera and get ready to fall in love with New York City for the first time—or all over again.

Last Fling Pumpkin Sling

2012 Last Fling Pumpkin Sling about Community and Country It’s about the fun challenge of slinging a 2-3 pound pumpkin through the air the furthest. It’s about the competition between some rival schools and some down home fun.

Last year a junk car was first driven, and then pushed, around the field of play as a target for machines. Ending with a showdown of two machines with “Dueling Banjos” playing in the background added an element of fun. But the event concept goes much deeper. For organizers it is an opportunity to show a slice of Americana, from a little town called Harmony, located in scenic Warren County, New Jersey.

This year’s Pumpkin Sling will be held at Millbrook Farm again – at the intersection of Montana and Millbrook Roads – on October 20 & 21, with a hurricane/snow date of October 27 & 28, 2012.

It’s About Education As fun as the idea of building this contraption is to students, it’s more importantly a learning experience. Physics, mathematics and problem-solving all come in to play, as well as team building and sportsmanship.

The Pumpkin Sling organizers have invited Matt Long cast member of the Travel Channel's hit show Sand Masters, to carve a sand sculpture that will incorporate the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC. Matt has carved more than twenty 9/11 and other memorial sculptures in sand.

Other attractions include hot air balloon launches, paragliding demonstrations, craft, non-profit and food vendors, live entertainment of Brady the Class Clown and a children’s tent.

For a schedule visit www.pumpkinsling.com.
