Manhattan Gets Its Own New Water Taxi Beach at South Street Seaport

7/6/09 - By Anna Fader

We recently visited the new Water Taxi Beach at the South Street Seaport. Similar to the now closed original in Queens, this outdoor bar has a huge sandy beach area with picnic tables and great views out toward the Brooklyn Bridge and the East River and is a great place where families can enjoy a night out with kids in tow.

In addition to the sandy outdoor picnic area (toys are strewn throughout the sand and children play together while parents chill), the South Street Seaport Water Taxi Beach also has a mini-golf course (this is now closed), Ping-Pong tables, Skee-ball and games, all of which can be used for moderate fees.

There is the Beekman Beer Garden, which sells fish and chips, hot dogs and hamburgers, wings and the like, plus a raw bar and a bar for alcoholic beverages. We had oysters and fish and chips and watermelon slices and it was all excellent.

The Water Taxi Beach is somewhat hidden and you could easily go to the Seaport without even knowing it was there. Which, luckily, seems to be the case for all the tourists visiting. When we went, the Seaport was packed with tourists, but the Water Taxi Beach was not. I hope that doesn't change as more people find out about this great place.

The Water Taxi Beach can be accessed either from South Street at the end of Beekman (just North of the main Seaport entrance). It may look like you are walking into a service area, but it's back there. Or you can walk around the end of the pier to the left.

The new Manhattan Water Taxi Beach is a great new addition to Lower Manhattan and I hope to be frequenting it regularly. Perhaps we will even jump on the Water Taxi over to Brooklyn for some Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory Ice Cream after dinner next time.
