Long Island Kids' Activities July 27 & 28: Extreme Origami Exhibition, Singin' In The Rain, Exploring The Ultra Small

This weekend, celebrate the opening of Extreme Origami at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University. In this exhibit, the ancient art of paper folding is elevated to a whole new level. Feeling inspired to belt out a Gene Kelly song, or two? Then head over to the Gateway Playhouse for a production of Singin' In The Rain. Learn about nanotechnology and all things small at Brookhaven National Laboratory through informative discussions and hands-on exploration. Get in touch with nature at The Whaling Museum and Education Center of Cold Spring Harbor. At this soil soiree, grab a magnifying glass and look for critters, along with planting seeds in a decorated pot. Also on tap: Finding The Loch Ness Book Signing at Jungle Bob's Reptile World, and Plaza Theatrical Productions Presents Beauty And The Beast at Long Island Children's Museum. Opening Weekend: Extreme Origami - Stony Brook
At the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, celebrate the opening of this exhibition, which features a modern twist on the ancient art of origami. Japanese paper folding is brought to life through mixed media (i.e. metal and fabric) and multimedia components, with artwork influenced by medicine, mathematics, and engineering. Attend a workshop and create one of a kind artwork.

Sensory Friendly Roller Skating - Seaford
Rockin' and rollin' at the skating rink is fun for some, but for others, displaying fancy footwork in a calming environment is more enjoyable. At United Skates of America, show off these moves in an atmosphere free of loud music and flashing lights.

Saturday Craft: Sand Casting - Glen Cove
It's time to get crafty at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve. Use seashells, beach glass, and sand to create a one of a kind keepsake.

Ocean Science Sunday: Soil Soiree - Cold Spring Harbor
Got a green thumb? Head over to The Whaling Museum and Education Center of Cold Spring Harbor and get in touch with nature. Look for critters in the soil, create a dirt painting, and plant a seed in a decorated pot.

Annual Car Show - Miller Place
Head over to the William Miller House and see a presentation of cars from yesteryear by The Long Island Street Rod Association. Live music and historic home tours round out the day.

Summer Sunday: Exploring The Ultra Small - Upton
At Brookhaven National Laboratory, discover the fascinating world of nanotechnology. Attend a discussion about nanomaterials, learn to sing the nano song, and enjoy hands-on science exploration. Check out the Van de Graaff generator and see human hair stand on end.

Finding The Loch Ness Book Signing - Centereach
Long Island author Johnny Waffles presents his illustrated chapter book at Jungle Bob's Reptile World. Learn about the McPhee twins and their incredible journey. After the presentation, meet the author and attend the book signing.

Family Fun Day - Stony Brook
At The Long Island Museum, listen to beach inspired tunes by Funkytown Playground. A show by The Magic of Amore and craft-making opportunities rounds out the day.

Singin' In The Rain - Bellport
Relive that "glorious feeling" once again at the Gateway Playhouse. This musical hits the stage with classic songs including Good Mornin’, Make ‘Em Laugh, and You’re My Lucky Star.
