STEM-Inspired Play Space Opens in Queens

10/27/15 - By Rachel Sokol

A techie-inspired play space that just opened in the Glendale neighborhood of Queens is offering everything from tumble and mommy and me classes for toddlers to coding and fashion design classes for older kids.

With everything kids love—from padded play areas for infants and preschoolers and robotics and Legos for their older siblings and teens, iPlayTek promises immersive and inspiring fun for all ages, especially at a time when many parents are on the lookout for new ways to incorporate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) into activities and outings.

The 6,000-square-foot iPlayTek, located in The Shops at Atlas Park, was founded by local Queens mom, Rosa Barney. It's separated into two distinct areas: one for those under 5 and another for big kid classes.

The padded, recreational play space for the infant to preschool set is decorated with splatter-paint and inspirational quotes. Kids can slide down mini chutes, explore a wooden jungle gym, crawl through mazes, play with toys and more. Recreational activities will rotate every few weeks to maintain variety. Cubbyholes filled with paper, markers, crayons and other art supplies are adjacent to the play area, so kids can enjoy arts and crafts before or after their romp in the play space.

While the romper room is for tots, this classroom caters to tweens and teens.

The separate classroom space is lined with computers. Older kids and teens can enjoy classes such as robotics (through Lego Education), coding (Scratch, Python, Minecraft) and cut and sew fashion design. Instructors are certified early education educators. Programming for little ones include various "mommy and me" type of classes such as baby sensory play, little steps, art, gym and music. Check the website for a full list of offerings.

Unfortunately, iPlayTek does not offer drop-in sessions at this time; you must register for classes in order to enjoy the space. Membership perks include a free birthday party, unlimited access to the open gym area for kids and tots and the occasional “Date Night” drop-off program—always a parent favorite. (Sibling discounts are also available.)

Though no food is served on-site, visitors are welcome to bring in food and snacks and enjoy it at the tables and couches near the main entrance. This area is also where strollers are stored. If you need to grab a bite to eat, you'll find a Starbucks and California Pizza Kitchen right across the street. Note of caution: Toys "R" Us is right next door.
