Bundle Up & Explore Nature with LI Kids this Winter

Don't let the cold weather keep you indoors for months. Bundle up the kids and head outside to explore Long Island. From nature hikes to seal cruises, our area has many outdoor offerings--even in the winter. And for more activities, be sure to check out our Long Island events calendar.

Seal Walks
Various Saturdays and Sundays through March
Montauk State Park
A State Park naturalist will lead visitors on a leisurely beach walk to an area where up to four species of seals can be observed. Along the way, there will be opportunities to see many winter birds and to explore marine geology. The walk is approximately 3 miles long and will take 2-3 hours to complete.

Seal Cruises
Saturdays and Sundays through the end of April
Out of Freeport Marina
Join the Riverhead Foundation as they sail from 28A Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport aboard the Captain Lou Fleet to view winter harbor seal populations throughout Hempstead Bay. A naturalist will be on board to discuss biology and behavior of seals and other marine life encountered. There is a heated cabin and warm beverages and snacks available. 

Let It Snow

Learn about the science of snow and if there's snow outside, participants will play in the snow as well.

Winter Family Exploration & Scavenger Hunt
January 23, 2016, 10am
South Fork Natural History Museum, Bridgehampton
Join Crystal in a family friendly scavenger hunt through a field, forests, and near a pond to find out what a fox, a turkey, bluebird, or mouse might use for shelter when the snow blows and what their versions of a grocery store/restaurant are. Bundle up, and make sure you put on plenty of “modern” clothing to keep warm.

Full Moon Night Hike
January 23, 2016 at 5pm
Quogue Wildlife Refuge, Quogue
Hike through the forest up to North Pond as we look and listen for nocturnal creatures, and enjoy some night vision activities under the light of the moon. The walk will last approximately 1 ½ hours.

Winter Celebration
Saturday, January 23, 2016, 10am
Connetquot State Park, Oakdale
This is a family event. Walk through stations with hands on activities and science experiments. Each station will have unique winter-themed activities.

Tiny Tots: Nature Discoveries
January 26, 2016 and every other Tuesday through March 22
Connetquot State Park, Oakdale
Explore the natural world around us. These programs will connect children and their parents with nature through short walks, animal visitors and crafts. Ages 3-5.

Tiny Tots: Let's Discover Nature
January 28, 2016 and every other Thursday though March 24
Caleb Smith State Park, Smithtown
The Let's Discover Nature hour is a special time for both parent and child to discover the wonders of their natural world together. Each program's theme will use nature explorations and hands-on activities as a springboard for learning.

Deer Detectives

Discover the way deer live and outside we will search for clues to find them.

Tracks & Traces: A Family Program

Bayard Cutting Arboretum, Great River
There are many animals hidden in the winter forest, but finding them can be a challenge! Learn how to "read the signs" on a short hike as we search for the tracks and traces that animals leave behind. Dress for the weather.

Maple Sugaring
January 31, 2016, 1:30pm
Nissequogue River State Park, Kings Park
From seed to syrup, discover the importance of their maple trees. This hands-on program will teach you how to identify and tap a maple tree.

The Trails Least Traveled
February 6, 2016, 1:30pm. Also on March 5.
Connetquot State Park, Oakdale
This new series will take place the first Saturday of each month and will average 3-4 miles.

Snowshoeing
February 13, 2016, 10am
​Heckscher State Park, East Islip
Experience Heckscher State Park with a winter blanket. Participants will look for tracks and signs of life as they travel the trails. No snow? The group will take a nature hike by foot. Bring your own snowshoes.

Extreme Cold Weather Survivors (a children's program)

Winter Wildlife Safari

Caumsett State Park Historic Preserve, Huntington
A fun-filled winter safari for a walk through the preserve, searching for wildlife that call Caumsett home. Discover animals in their winter habitats and how they adapt to the coldest time of the year.
