May GoList: Best Things To Do with Philly Kids

Philadelphia welcomes the month of May with spring fever in full effect. Our Event Calendar is filled with ways to get outside and enjoy the season, including many festivals and garden celebrations. Of course, our top picks for May wouldn't be complete without a special Mother's Day event and a host of parades on Memorial Day.

Looking for indoor fun this month? Several classic tales are being performed on stage in May, with shows customized for young audiences.

Here are our top picks for the best things to do in the area this month (besides thanking those April showers for bringing May flowers).

Best NYC Family Festivals and Street Fairs This May

There are street fairs and then there are street fairs. We don't mean those random ones selling irregular socks and fried Oreos; we're talking about true community festivals. Each one is unique, reflecting the character of its neighborhood, and many feature rides, performances, activities and food. The hard part, of course, is knowing which is which, but don't worry, we've taken the guesswork out of it for you.

We've gone through the city's list of festivals, street fairs and carnivals for the month of May and put together our roundup of top picks. Most of these fetes are FREE or cost just a couple of bucks, and in many cases your dollars go to support a local charity or school. Here are 25 awesome fests happening in NYC this May from the always popular tot-friendly Touch-a-Truck to a brand-new family fest at the Children's Museum of the Arts to Lincoln Center's annual Kids Spring Fling.

You can find even more seasonal activities in our Spring Fun Guide.

You and your family can join in on the fun with these festivals, fairs, and special events located around Fairfield County this season.  If all that fresh air has awakened your sense of wanderlust, make sure you hop over to Westchester and check out some of their Spring Festivals  too!

12 Things to Do with Your NYC Baby Before They Turn 1

The whole "New York City is a terrible place to raise babies" debate seems to continue, especially in conversations on local parenting groups. But as a mom of three who had all my babies right here in NYC, I disagree. Yes, it can be a nuisance to find subway stations with working elevators and contend with tiny spaces and noisy neighbors, but there are so many enriching first-time experiences to share with your baby in the city that make it worth muddling through the inconveniences.

So stock your diaper bag, strap your infant into a stroller or carrier and try these 12 things to do with your baby before age 1—one "first" per month before toddlerhood.

May GoList: Best Things To Do With NJ Kids This Month

May is bursting with things to do with the family, be it Cinco de Mayo fun, Mother's Day events or the gazillion fairs and festivals around the state. But of course, we have our favorites, and this post highlights 10 of them, such as Kite Day at Terhune Orchards, an arbor day celebration at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum, or an Obstacle Course run with options for disabled participants. Have a great May, NJ!

Weekend Fun for LA Kids: Yallwest, Arroyo Adventures, and Cinco de Mayo, April 30 - May 1

Look, we here at Mommy Poppins don't play favorites, but even we have to admit that this weekend little Santa Monica is really something special. It becomes the geographic center of the YA world with Yallwest, earns a standing O for outstanding children's theater, takes a last bow for the kiddie concert on the pier, offers up tricks on two wheels (like trading out our old bikes and maybe teaching us to ride), and composes a love poem to literacy in Virginia Park.

Not that our other 'hoods aren't making us proud with their accomplishments: Santa Ana celebrates Cinco de Mayo and May Day. Downtown celebrates Cinco de Mayo, children's film, Children's Day, and opera (because it's classy). Van Nuys celebrates vegan eats; Downey celebrates Open Streets; Fillmore and Fullerton celebrate railroads, and Sun Valley celebrates sanitation.

Public service announcement to sons, daughters, grandchildren, spouses, and friends: May is the time for honoring mothers. As in Mother’s Day. As in next Sunday. There’s still time to prepare. Your momma will love you regardless, but who's to say a little extra effort couldn't win you a spot as new favorite?

Mother's Day Brunch Restaurants in Los Angeles and Orange County

Mother's Day, and the brunching is easy—and when we say easy, we mean the culinary version of a chick flick. This is not a day for the Denny's Lumberjack Slam (not that there's anything wrong with that); Mother's Day brunch begs sprigs of rosemary, ocean views, and maybe a harp plucked with a rose. Or, if that's not your thing, Fillmore & Western Railway is happy to Throw Mama on the Train. The key is Mom's Choice—all day!

Read on for some of our favorite restaurants that offer a pretty darn fabulous Mother's Day brunch.

Weekend Fun for Philly Kids: Festivals and Springtime Holidays Apr 30-May 1

April showers bring May flowers, as the saying goes. However, May also brings a variety of celebrations and festivals to the Philadelphia area. This weekend you can enjoy Brick Fest LiveCinco de May Festival and Wyebrook Farm Music Festival, which are all full of family fun.

In addition to festivals, children and adults alike can enjoy the outdoors this weekend with some Earth Day activities. In fact, both Rolling Hill Park and Narberth Park host events this Saturday. Celebrate the month of May at Everhart Park's May Day event or acknowledge Arbor Day by planting a tree at Pennypacker Mills.
