Father's Day Weekend with NYC Kids: Free SummerStage Brooklyn Family Day, Fish Parade & Festival, Jazz Age Lawn Party June 15-16

Things to do with kids: Father's Day Weekend with NYC Kids: Free SummerStage Brooklyn Family Day, Fish Parade & Festival, Jazz Age Lawn Party June 15-16

Dad's the king on Sunday but you can celebrate Father's Day in NYC all weekend long with a wide variety of fun family outings. Saturday brings the annual Hunts Point Fish Parade and Festival and the Turtle Cove Golf and Baseball Center's opening season festivities. On Sunday, groove to cool tunes at SummerStage Brooklyn Family Day or catch a 19th-century style baseball game at the historic Bartow-Pell Mansion. Or dance the weekend away at the retro Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island.

For those of you who like to plan ahead, two awesome free summer performance series kick off this weekend: the River to River Festival in Lower Manhattan, which runs through Sunday, July 14 and the Harlem Meer Performance Festival in northern Central Park, which goes through Labor Day weekend. Also, beginning this Friday you can enter the lottery for the NYC Park Department's FREE summer swimming lessons, which start in July.

All of our best bets for Father's Day weekend are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide. Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

Surf NYC: Surfing Lessons for Kids at Rockaway Beach

Things to do with kids: Surf NYC: Surfing Lessons for Kids at Rockaway Beach

Of all the cool things you can do in NYC, surfing is probably not the first one that comes to mind. But that's what we love about living in New York: It seems like you can do just about everything in some nook or cranny of the five boroughs, including catch a wave.

New York City actually offers 14 miles of beach, more than many more obvious beach destinations, and a population of surfers to rival any of them. While surfing is still illegal at most NYC beaches, thanks to an overturned law in 2005, Rockaway Beach has become the surfing mecca of the city.

Unfortunately, Rockaway Beach was hard hit by Hurricane Sandy and is still struggling to recover, but, ironically, local surfers claim that the waves are even better this year because of the storm. With the weather heating up and the A train back in action, it’s the perfect time to get the kids out on a board.

Read on to find out where kids can take surfing lessons, rent equipment or sign up for surfing summer camp, plus learn the ever important Surfer’s Code, without having to leave the five boroughs.

Where to See Macy's 4th of July Fireworks in New York City 2013

Things to do with kids: Where to See Macy's 4th of July Fireworks in New York City 2013

On Thursday, July 4, crowds will flock to Manhattan's West Side to watch Macy's 4th of July Fireworks light up the night sky in honor of Independence Day. More than 40,000 fireworks will burst forth from four barges floating on the Hudson River, synchronized to an eclectic soundtrack of patriotic standards, and classic and current pop songs that were all handpicked by Grammy Award winner Usher. In fact, he even helped influence the design of the fireworks!

While it may seem like the holiday is a long way off, it's actually just three weeks away. Tickets for paid viewing options, like 4th of July fireworks cruises and watching from the deck of the Intrepid, are already on sale and going fast. Of course you don't need to spend a penny see the sparklers, but there are some important things to know before you go. We've got the scoop on how to find the best places to watch Macy's 4th of July Fireworks with your family.

Free Outdoor Movies for NYC Kids this Summer

Things to do with kids: Free Outdoor Movies for NYC Kids this Summer

Enjoying a free alfresco film is a rite of summer in New York City. Even if you go to see a flick you've watched a million times at home, it's a totally different experience viewing it in the open air alongside a couple hundred other movie lovers. It ends up being a pretty thrilling communal event.

A few outdoor movie series, like RiverFlicks for Kids in the West Village, are aimed specifically at children. But even the big grown-up ones like Bryant Park and Brooklyn Bridge Park's Syfy Movies With A View include a family-friendly screening or two. Plus this year, the Central Park Conservancy is asking New Yorkers to pick which movies they want to see for the park's annual August outdoor film festival!

Movies usually begin at dusk between 8-8:30pm but make sure you arrive early: The well known series fill up fast. Plus, sometimes there is cool, pre-movie entertainment. So pack a picnic, bring your blanket, sit back, relax and enjoy the show at one of these outdoor summer movie series in NYC.
