Memorial Day Weekend for LA Kids: Greeks, Scots, Music, and Fireworks, May 28-30

First and foremost, Memorial Day is about the members of the armed forces who gave their lives in our nation’s service. Their sacrifice is unimaginable, our debt to them beyond measure. To those lost, and to those who serve our nation every day, we salute you.

The weekend is not all somber reflection: Memorial Day also means a long weekend, and the unofficial start of summer. Festival is the word of the day: throughout the Southland folks gather to enjoy yummies and duckies, and to celebrate different cultures (including Greek, Scottish, and Topangan). Discovery Cube LA opens two new exhibits, and Discovery Cube OC comes racing in with one of its own.

And, of course, Memorial Day weekend closes with tributes to our fallen heroes. Ceremonies are being held at the Nixon Presidential Library, in Burbank and Canoga Park, and at Woodlawn and Forest Lawn Cemeteries.

Memorial Day Weekend for Boston Kids: Festivals and Flags, May 28-30

To commemorate Memorial Day, American flags are waving all around Boston, local towns are holding parades, and families can step into history with special activities or spend a peaceful moment reflecting on the significance of the flags on Boston Common.

Family fun this weekend includes a artsy playdate, a celebration of campfire music, and the chance to use some mighty machines. Spending time outdoors at a popular annual festival in Newburyport (pictured) and at an amazing-sounding blue moon performance are two great ways to make the most of the unofficial start of summer.
