Step Back in Time at Staten Island's Alice Austen House Museum

Step Back in Time at Staten Island's Alice Austen House Museum

The Alice Austen House Museum is a lovely Victorian cottage, but what makes this historic house particularly interesting is the story of its namesake. Alice Austen (1866-1952) was a self-taught photographer who spent most her life in this home, also known as Clear Comfort. It sits atop a hill in the 15-acre Alice Austen Park, which boasts amazing panoramic views of New York Bay and the city beyond.

In addition to preserving many of her belongings and furnishings, the Alice Austen House Museum displays many of her vintage photographs. Austen was known for her documentary style, quite rare in her day, and she snapped photos of high society, immigrant life, new inventions like the bicycle and historic events. At the museum, families can explore the house, parts of which date back to the 17th century, see her pictures and even try hands-on workshops where kids can learn photo techniques of the past and present. Since my nine-year-old son is into photography, it's been on my bucket list for a while now, and we recently found time to check it out.

Free Outdoor Summer Music Festivals and Concerts in New York City

Things to do with kids: Free Outdoor Summer Music Festivals and Concerts in New York City

Although some New York City outdoor music and culture series are created specifically with children in mind, there are lots of grown-up ones that families can enjoy, too. At these wonderful alfresco events—most of which take place in parks and plazas—families can pack a picnic, stake out a spot, lay down a blanket and soak up some culture at no cost. Don't worry if the kids aren't totally into it; sit along the perimeter and let them run around, dance and play and they'll be happy.

While many of the series including SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn! and Lincoln Center Out of Doors host dedicated family days, it's worth browsing their full schedules. There's no minimum age to enjoy jazz, classical or rock, right?

We've rounded up the city's best free outdoor music and performance series and highlighted the events we think will be of particular interest to families.

Things to Do with NYC Kids on June 6 When Public Schools Are Closed

Things to do with kids: Things to Do with NYC Kids on June 6 When Public Schools Are Closed

Every first Thursday of June, New York City public school students have the day off for Chancellor's Conference Day. What's that you ask? Well originally it was known as Brooklyn-Queens Day, an obscure religious holiday that most folks knew little about that was only observed in those boroughs. But somewhere along the line the name and meaning changed, and suddenly kids throughout NYC got a secular public school holiday.

If you're lucky enough to be able to take the day off with the kids, we have some ideas for how to make the most of it, from general summer fun to the kickoff of the public library's summer reading program. But if you've got to work on Thursday like the teachers (it's used as a school staff development day), there are a handful of drop-off holiday camps where your kids can have a blast while you do what you've got to do.

This Week: Best Things to Do in June, Summer Festivals and Fairs, Summer Camps with Availability

Things to do with kids: This Week: Best Things to Do in June, Summer Festivals and Fairs, Summer Camps with Availability

Are you ready for June? I know our kids are. Every morning, my second grader excitedly crosses off another day on the calendar as we count down to summer. If you're still trying to figure out what to do with the kids over school break, we just put up a list of high-quality summer camps that still have availability for all ages and interests. If you've got camp covered, then start poking around our Summer Fun Guide. We're still in the process of going over all of our popular seasonal posts from years past, but a lot of the big ones have already been updated like NYC beaches, water playgrounds, free outdoor sports programs for kids, June fairs and festivals and carousels—we even have info on the just reopened B&B Carousell in Coney Island.

Speaking of June, we just posted a brand-new Go NYC List, which highlights the best things to do with kids throughout the month. Many of our FREE annual favorites take place in June, like the Coney Island Mermaid Parade and the Figment arts fest on Governors Island. My family already has both of those marked in our calendar. If you're expecting or have a newborn, you'll want to put this Sunday's Brooklyn Baby Expo in your calendar, too. Hosted by A Child Grows in Brooklyn, the event features seminars, top baby gear, fun for the kids and more. And you can save 15% on tickets by using the discount code MP-BBE2013.

Our New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut sites are also all about summer fun. It's worth checking them out for great day trip and vacation ideas, like western heritage theme park Wild West City in Sussex County and Chatham on Cape Code. Our NYC Family Day Trips and Weekend Getaways Guide and Travel site also have detailed info on hundreds of destinations near and far, including what makes each one special for kids and families.

And if you're feeling lucky, it's almost your last chance to enter to win a children’s birthday party package at the brand-new Fantasy Forest at the Flushing Meadows Carousel—a $500 value. Enter on our Giveaways page. We're also excited to report that our Mommy Poppins App IndieGoGo campaign is at 26%. Help us get to 50% by next week and earn cool rewards for your support.

Here's what else we covered on the NYC site this week:

Tennis for NYC Kids: Free and Cheap Tennis Lessons and Courts

Things to do with kids: Tennis for NYC Kids: Free and Cheap Tennis Lessons and Courts

Tennis is one of those lifelong sports than can be learned and enjoyed at any age. The main thing you need is enough energy to run around the court—and kids have that in spades. Don't worry if your child isn't the next Serena Williams; tennis is a great sport for improving coordination, arm and leg strength, and sportsmanship. And aside from the racket, you don't have a ton of equipment to buy or lug around.

Summer is the perfect time for New York City kids to give the sport a try since there are a few FREE youth tennis programs plus inexpensive game play at public courts, which are already open for the season. Here's where kids can swing their tennis rackets in NYC.

Free & Fun Things to Do this Weekend with NYC Kids: Science Festival, Howl!, Whitney Family Day, Pop-Up Pianos June 1-2

Things to do with kids: Free & Fun Things to Do this Weekend with NYC Kids: Science Festival, Howl!, Whitney Family Day, Pop-Up Pianos June 1-2

Since much of Memorial Day weekend was a washout, we're hoping that sprinkler and beach season starts in earnest this Saturday, especially since the MTA is finally restoring service on the A and S lines to Rockaway Beach! Looking for dry fun? There are a bunch of FREE festivals including two of our annual favorites: the Great Howl! Out Loud Kids Carnival in Tompkins Square Park and Washington Square Park's Ultimate Science Street Fair (that's my son in the photo at the 2010 fest).

Other cool activities include a walking (and eating) tour of the Lower East Side, an art-filled family day at the Whitney and the return of the FREE Sing for Hope pianos that are popping up all around town.

These are just a few of the great things going on this weekend. All of our best bets are below. You can find additional options in our Event Calendar and our Summer Fun Guide. And if you're looking to plan out your entire month, check out the new edition of our NYC Go List, which highlights the absolute best things to do with kids throughout June.

Starlight Park in the Bronx Reopens After a Stunning Renovation

Starlight Park in the Bronx Reopens After a Stunning Renovation

As a Bronx resident, I can say from firsthand experience that we don't get as many fancy newfangled parks and playgrounds as some of the other boroughs. So I'm always thrilled when a new state-of-the-art green space like Starlight Park opens in my neck of the woods.

Technically, Starlight Park isn't new but it was closed for more than a decade. It finally reopened earlier this month after a $18 million overhaul and is full of new amenities. Nestled between the Bronx River and the Sheridan Expressway, the renovated 13-acre park features two playgrounds, picnic areas, bike trails, ball fields, manicured lawns and access to the waterfront. The one big downside to Starlight Park is that it's tough to get to. Read on for a look at all the green space has to offer as well as tips for the best way to get there.

NYC Summer Camps with Availability — Yes, Even Now!

Things to do with kids: NYC Summer Camps with Availability — Yes, Even Now!

You've all heard the hype: In NYC, you have to sign your kids up for summer camp at the beginning of the year otherwise you'll never snag a spot. Honestly, for some camps that really is true: Ultra-popular, small camps fill up quickly with returning campers who get first priority, so you have to be on the ball for those programs.

However, even if you haven't spent one minute thinking about summer camp this year, there's no need to panic. There are lots of programs that still have space. Large camps like the 92nd Street Y, Chelsea Piers and Oasis can often accommodate kids up until the last minute, and many specialized programs have availability here and there.

Of course, if you've been too busy to book a camp for your kids, you hardly have the time to call around now. That's why we did the work for you: Here are more than 50 camps that still have spots for summer 2013 (as of this writing). For more information about these and many other New York City-area camps, visit our 2013 Summer Camp Guide.
