South Slope Derby 2019
Expect a neighborhood, kid friendly vibe with all the local Brooklyn traditions: vendors, stoop sales and barbeques combined with outrageous art cars, at the 11th annual Open Source Soap Box Derby. Watch participants from the summer Soap Box Workshop race their fun, funky, eco-friendly contraptions down 17th Street in Brooklyn.
Since mid-July, Koko NYC kids have been hard at work in a re-purposed historic church lot on 17th St. and 5th Avenue in Brooklyn designing and building over fifty original gravity powered art vehicles. Using sketches and calculations, they bring their creations to life with found and recycled objects and building materials, turning piles of seemingly useless trash into functional machines.
All kids ages 7-15 who made a gravity controlled car out of recycled materials can register for free at 11am. Ages 16-100 can also participate for free, but will not be entered in the competitive race.
