When Greystone Park was opened in 1876 it was officially the New Jersey Asylum for the Insane at Morristown. Built using principles developed by Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Kirkbride as a better way to provide health care for the mentally ill, the 712 acre property was designed to be self-sufficient. Now closed, most of the land is being redeveloped as the Central Park of Morris County. Explore the once-stately grounds, and remaining hospital buildings retain much of the architectural grandeur, but they are unsafe and off-limits. Pre-registration is required, e-mail: macgraphics1@verizon.net.
