Many running races have a kid component, but it can feel like an afterthought, especially if your child really loves to run. And finding a triathlon for multi-sport kids can be even harder. The key is finding a race that’s both light-hearted and serious so that your child can compete and feel great after crossing the finish line. Race season is upon us, and we’ve found eight upcoming Boston-area events that are perfect for kids who love to swim, bike or run:

Memorial Day Weekend in NYC: Governors Island, Beaches, Fairs

Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer, is here! New York City's big seasonal attractions open on Saturday, including local beaches, Governors Island and Victorian Gardens in Central Park. Plus, if it reaches 80 degrees, the city's destination playground sprinklers might be on, too.

While beaches and playgrounds are open all summer, events like Fleet Week ship tours, a Fort Greene dance fest, Governors Island Family Fun Day, Memorial Day in Prospect Park and the final days of Brooklyn's kiddie ride extravaganza at the Kings County Fair are on tap this weekend only.

Thinking about a last-minute getaway? We've pulled together great family day trips on Long Island and Westchester, as well as our favorite nearby beaches like Fire Island's Ocean Beach and those a bit farther down the Jersey Shore. You might also try one of the nearby water parks or amusement parks, many of which open for the season on Saturday—there are more than a dozen new rides and thrills arriving at some of our favorite parks in 2016! Also, don't forget that many local farms in the greater NYC area are open for strawberry picking with the kids, beginning this weekend.

Read on for our best bets for Memorial Day weekend events for kids in NYC. More family fun can be found in our Event CalendarSpring Fun Guide and just released Summer Fun Guide.

However you spend the three-day holiday weekend, we hope you have a blast!

10 Things To Do with Toddlers at the Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore is the quintessential summer getaway for Philly residents- especially families. It's not too far, it's got great beaches and fun amusements for the kids. But you may be wondering what to do with your younger kids on your family vacation. Toddlers can be tricky to entertain, but the Jersey Shore has plenty. We've rounded up some great activities that little tykes will love. Whether you're visiting for a weekend, or you're there for a whole week, you'll find plenty of kid-friendly fun on this list.

Memorial Day Parades Around LA and the OC

One thing about Los Angeles - it's not a one-parade town. If festivals are too stationary for you, if you need a parade to drum up an appetite for that Memorial Day BBQ, then you've got it made in the shade (as long as you've found a shady spot for your  chair) in Los Angeles and Orange County on Monday. The good news for the parade abstainers is that none of the parades on this holiday marches down a major thoroughfare (unless the 405 gets shut down - in which case Topanga is going to hear plenty of honking that isn't for peace). For parade fans, the patriotic fanfare never sounded so good.

Celebrating Memorial Day in Eastern Connecticut

It's the unofficial start of summer so beaches are beckoning, carnivals are calling, and outdoor parks are just begging to be explored. However, Memorial Day is also the day in which we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, and there are many parades, tributes, and ceremonies held in their honor across Eastern Connecticut. Enjoy our fair state and usher in the warmer months and brighter days ahead.

Memorial Day Weekend Fun for NJ Kids: Kite Festival, Adventure to Africa, May 28-30

The unofficial start to the summer is here, Jersey, and that means plenty of time to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends! If you're planning to stick around town, there's fun to be had in every corner of our state. Animal lovers will want to check out Adventure to Africa at Turtle Back Zoo, the Animal Experience program at the Stickley Museum and the Discovery Saturday event (all about ladybugs) at the Reeves-Reed Arboretum. Round out your long weekend with the Fit & Fun Festival at Camden Children's Garden, the Wildwoods International Kite Festival down the shore or the Stream Safari at Valley Crest Farm. For additional Memorial Day Weekend activity options, take a look at our full Event Calendar.

Take the Subway to NYC Beaches: Coney, Rockaway, Orchard

Fourteen miles of sparkling sand and crashing waves can be found in four of the five boroughs (sorry river-locked Manhattan), which is good news for NYC families. Because as much as we enjoy hitting the Jersey Shore, Fire Island and other Long Island beaches, we're not big fans of renting cars and sitting in traffic.

New York City's beaches are just a subway, bus or ferry ride away. From the "Bronx Rivera" to iconic Coney Island and the Rockaways, these urban seasides often offer just about everything suburban beaches do except the out-of-town commute.

Game On: 8 Soccer Classes for NYC Kids

The sun is shining, the birds are singing—and it's time to play ball! Soccer that is. We've rounded up all the best NYC soccer spots for budding kid athletes, from preschoolers just learning to kick that checkered orb, to middle-schoolers ready to master the roll and step over dribble.

Summer can be the perfect time for your kid to get into the game through a day camp or lessons with one of the NYC youth organizations listed below. Some even offer drop-in classes. But soccer can be a year-round sport, even in NYC. Check out newly opened The Pitch, an indoor soccer field in Williamsburg or longtime favorites like Chelsea Piers. Bonus: Many of these places also offer soccer-themed birthday parties.

Read on for eight spots offering soccer sessions to NYC kids. You can find even more options in our NYC Directory.
